In the earlier thirumozhi (divine verses), 2.2, forgetting that he had to take milk in line with his incarnation in the human species, krishNa was sleeping. yaSOdhAp pirAtti had to wake him up and force him to consume milk several times, even when he tried to avoid it. AzhwAr, assuming her relationship with krishNa [mother – son] and her affection towards krishNa, spoke about him as if he were also living at the same time [as krishNa and yaSOdhAp pirAtti], enjoyed those activities and became happy.

yaSOdhAp pirAtti desired that he should have his ears pierced [for donning decorative ear-rings], have the holes to be made a little bigger and to adorn his ears with ear rings. In order to enjoy these, she invited all the women in thiruvAyppAdi [SrI gOkulam] and kept several eatables and other features to welcome them when they come for the function. When she called out to krishNa to have his ears pierced, he refused to come, saying that it will pain him. She then pacified him by speaking words which will remove his fear and made several eatables for him which will make him accept her request for having his ears pierced. AzhwAr too, desiring to enjoy her experience, takes over her pathos, calls out to him using her words through his pAsurams, and becomes pleased, in this thirumozhi.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, the following: In the earlier thirumozhi, AzhwAr [with the pathos of yaSOdhAp pirAtti] had told krishNa, as in 2.2.5 “You should listen to the words of your mother” and as in 2.2.9 “Do not indulge in deceptive activities such as playing in dirt, to make your form dirty”. krishNa did not listen to such words. Since krishNa had incarnated in human species, in line with that species, he had to show obedience towards his followers explicitly. Accordingly, he agreed to undergo the function of piercing a hole in his ears [here, it should be mentioned that piercing the ear is similar to knowing about emperumAn through the senses]. This action does not indicate that the knowledge [about emperumAn] gained through senses would shine brightly [our senses will not know about emperumAn on their own; they can know only through an AchAryan (preceptor)]. We need our senses to know about emperumAn [through an AchAryan]. While senses and body have been with us right from the time of our birth, when we understand the meanings of entities seen and unseen [entities seen are those which we come across in this materialistic realm while entities unseen are entities such as emperumAn, nithyasUris et al] through those senses, it is only through ears that we hear [about emperumAn] through our pUrvAchAryas’ [preceptors in the past] words and conduct. Those come to us through our present day AchAryas who have imbibed their [pUrvAchAyas’] words and conduct and manifest the same through their own words and deeds. Even if those had been absent, we are still able to hear from those who have explained AzhwArs’ dhivya prabandhams [divine verses] with their established words and meanings, regarding the initial, middle and final parts [of AzhwArs’ verses and meanings]. It is only to listen to the words and meanings of those AzhwArs’ verses that our ears have been pierced. Recalling this, one has to keep touching the holes in the ears. It is widely said in the world “Keep noting the injury in your ears” [Do not forget to listen to good tidings through your ears; it is to make us understand the importance of piercing our ears and to listen to the words of preceptors about emperumAn that krishNa underwent this samskAram (function) of having his ears pierced].

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
