I have brought invaluable crocodile-shaped ear rings with which one could buy all the things on earth. I will apply the cotton thread when it is a bit warm, so that it will go in easily. I will provide you with whatever eatables etc which you desire. Oh, one who is highly splendorous and who incarnated in this clan of cowherds, to uplift them and who became their leader subsequently! Oh, one who is the consort of SrI mahAlakshmi, who made the cowherd girls to become infatuated with you and who lives in their hearts forever! You should come here.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

vaiyam … – yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa “It is not only the golden ear rings. I have also kept ear rings which look like crocodiles living in the vast ocean, with which the entire earth could be bought; they are that expensive”. krishNa asks her “Aren’t you saying this in order to apply the cotton thread to my ears? Even as you apply the cotton thread, my ears will pain. I do not want that”

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term vAr kadal refers to the length, surrounding nature and fullness of water.

veyyavE kAdhil thiriyai iduvan – even when she tells him that she will apply the cotton thread with a little bit of warmth such that the pain in the ears will be reduced, he does not agree. To make him agree, she tells him…

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the long syllable E (as in veyyavE) should be transposed to veyyath thiriyaiyE [warm cotton thread only]. If the text had been meyyavE [instead of veyyavE], it would refer to krishNa accosting her “You would show something and apply something else” to which yaSOdhAp pirAtti would respond, saying “You would see that my words bear only truth”

nI vENdiyadhu ellAm tharuvan – I will give you the eatables which you like such as mAshA bhUpam (vadai), gudA bhUpam (appam), fruits etc. Since he did not come even after this, she tells him …

uyya ivvAyar kulaththinil thOnRiya oN sudar Ayar kozhundhE – you incarnated in this clan of cow herds such that we, who too were born in this clan, could get uplifted, making that to be the reason for your splendorous radiance. Oh, one who became the leader of this clan subsequently, since your face would wither away if anyone in the clan became sad, just like the tender leaf would start withering if anything happens to the root!

maiyanmai seydhu iLa Aychchiyar uLLaththu mAdhavanE – You made the young girls in the cowherd clan to become infatuated with you, due to your qualities of beauty etc. You remained in their hearts forever. Oh, one who became dear to pirAtti (SrI mahAlakshmi) who stole your heart!

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that while krishNa makes the girls in the herd-clan to think constantly about him, SrI mahAlakshmi, who stays in his heart all the time, makes him to think of her constantly.

ingu vArAy – She calls him, by praising him.

We shall next consider the 4th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
