Simple Translation

Your father, who has affection towards protecting his people, has gone to graze the cows and has delayed in returning home. kamsan, who has strength in engaging in war, is cruel towards you. Oh, one who has the invigorating complexion of an ocean! There is none to protect you. On the other hand, you are roaming as you please, alone. Oh, one who is like a loony person, who consumed milk from the bosoms of monster pUthanA! Oh, one who killed the monster kESi! In order to attend the function of piercing your ears, children and herd-women have come to our house. I have kept ready materials such as areca nut etc, in order to honour them.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

pOyp pAdudaiya nin thandhaiyum thAzhththAn – your father, who is engaged with protection of you and his people in his heart, had said “I would go behind the cows, to graze them. You look after our son”. He has delayed in returning home. Alternatively, the term pOy would also refer to being in excess; thus, your father is deeply [excessively] thinking about protection of those to be protected. Just as it has been mentioned in thiruppAvai 1kUrvEl kodum thozhilan” (nandhagOpar would wield a sharp spear in his hand in order to protect infant krishNa), right from the day when you were born, he would wield the radiant spear and would attack an ant which was crawling below your cradle as if it were a lion. Such nandhagOpar, who had gone out on an errand, has not returned.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa tells AzhwAr [who is with the pathos of yaSOdhAp pirAtti] that he wants to go before nandhagOpar arrives. Since krishNa said that, AzhwAr tells him about kamsan.

poru thiRal kanjan kadiyan – kamsan, who is strong in waging a war, is cruel towards you. Since you are roaming around, in order to harm you at suitable places, I do not know as to “Who he would send and what he would do”.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that kamsan had become arrogant since he had won over indhra et al. Hence, he would be very cruel towards you.

kAppArum illai – There is none who knows the appropriate means in order to protect you [from kamsan’s cruel plans]. The one who is expected to protect you [nandhagOpar] has not returned; I am a lady without any strength. Who will protect you?

kadal vaNNA – Just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3-1-1 “thannEr Ayiram piLLaigaL” (krishNa would go around with a thousand children who were like him), do not think “I will roam around like the other children in this place. Will they [those sent by kamsan] know as to who I am, among those children?” Will your divine form, which is invigorating like the ocean, not reveal you to them? The implied meaning is that there is none who would be able to protect krishNa, knowing these nuances. Even if there is no enemy, you, for whom mangaLASAsanam has to be carried out due to misplaced sense of fear, there is none to protect you here which is teeming with enemies.

thaniyE pOy engum thiridhi – you are wandering alone in all the places, such that we cannot even think that you are safe with other children. What is the benefit even if you go along with other children?

pEyppAl mulai uNda piththanE – aren’t you the bewildered one, who drank milk from a fiend who came in the form of a mother, thinking her to be your real mother? The meaning conveyed here is that if the monstrous entities come in the form of one of his friends, he would mingle with such entities and play with them [thinking of them as his real friends].

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when krishNa tells AzhwAr that he would play along with the children in thiruvAyppAdi, AzhwAr tells him that krishNa doesn’t know the difference between the fiend pUthanA’s bosoms and real milk. How then would he be able to distinguish between his real friends and the monsters who come in the form of his friends? He further tells krishNa “Ever since you had consumed pUthanA’s milk, your intelligence has dullened a bit. Hence, you may mistake the monsters for your friends and play with them”.

kEsava nambI… – when krishNa manifested the completeness of his valour, saying “For what are your frightened like this? Am I not kESava nambi? Have you not heard about how kESi suffered at my hands?” yaSOdhAp pirAtti left that subject and focussed again on the subject that she had initially broached upon. She tells him “It is not only me. In order to witness the function of piercing your ears, all the children and ladies from thiruvAyppAdi have come. In order to honour the visitors, I have kept ready materials such as areca nut, betel leaves etc. You have to come now so that your ears could be pierced”.

We shall next consider the 2nd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
