Simple Translation

Even if I prayed to you saying “Oh, the benefactor, I worship you”, you are not accepting that. Oh, one who is indulging in mischiefs! If you come here, after joining hands with herd-girls who have curly hair, and perform kuravai dance with them, will I accept that as a good quality? Oh, the benefactor! If you allow me to apply the cotton thread to your ears, I will subsequently give you huge appams. Oh, vishNu, who has dark locks desired by girls who have huge, bamboo-like shoulders! You should come here.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

sOththam … – Since he did not come, even after she had called out to him saying “sOththambirAn ingE vArAy” [as seen towards the end of 4th pAsuram], yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa “Oh, my benefactor! Even when I pray to you telling you that I am worshipping you, you are not coming”. He responds saying “When I came near you, upon hearing you calling out to me, didn’t you beat me yesterday, instead of praising my good quality?” She tells him “Oh, are you talking about that one?”

suri kuzhalArOdu nI pOy kOththuk kuravai piNanindhu ingu vandhAl guNam koNdu iduvanO nambI – “When you return here after going to uninhabited places with girls who have curly locks, joining hands with them and indulging in the dance kuravai, will I consider that as a good quality, instead of finding fault with you?” Upon hearing this, he did not have a proper answer. Utilising that as an opportunity, when yaSOdhAp pirAtti tried to apply the cotton thread to his ears, he refused.

pirAnE! thiriyida ottil – pErththum periyana appam tharuvan – “Oh, one who is the benefactor to me in all manner! If you allow me to apply this little bit of cotton thread, I will give you bigger and bigger appams, even if you keep rejecting them saying that they are small”. Since he did not come, even after that…

vEy … – you have dark, lengthy locks which are desired much by the herd-girls who have big shoulders which appear like bamboo, in terms of their freshness and roundedness. Oh, vishNu! You should come here.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that yaSOdhAp pirAtti is calling krishNa by his distinguished name of vishNu, and attempts to apply the thread. She calls kESavan as vishNu. Since she had addressed him as kESava in the first pAsuram, recalling that, she is calling him as vishNu. Due to his curly locks, she is recalling his abundant locks now.

We shall next consider the 6th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
