Simple Translation

When I beat you [after hearing from various people that you had eaten sand], asking you to open your mouth, you cried in such a manner that your cry was heard all over the sky. When I desired to see if there is any trace of sand in your mouth, I saw the entire earth inside your divine stomach. I was frightened in my mind that you are not my son, but the lord of all, who had annihilated the monster madhu. There is no abscess in your ear. It would get twisted. Bear with me for a moment. Oh, one who is complete with all the auspicious qualities! Oh, one who is easy to approach! Oh, one who is magnanimous towards me like the dark cloud! Oh, one who is my protector! You should consume milk.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

viN … – when I [yaSOdhAp pirAtti] beat you, saying “You had eaten sand”, you opened your mouth crying out “Ah”. The cry reverberated throughout the expansive sky. Even as you cried, I wanted to see “If there is any sign of sand in your mouth”. When I saw the entire earth inside your mouth, I was frightened in my mind thinking “We had hurt him thinking that he is our son”. I thought “He is not our son. He is sarvESvaran (the lord of all)”. Since krishNa is of the type as said in SrI vishNu purANam 5-13-13 “ahamvO bAndhavO jAtha:” (I have been born as your relative), he was unable to tolerate her words which made him feel that he is alien to their clan. To make her forget that, he came near her such that she could hug him. When she tried to insert the cotton thread into the hole in his ears, he said “My ears will get hurt and form an abscess. I do not need that”

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti thinks that if she saw any remnants of sand in his mouth, she would brand him. When he said that he had not eaten sand, she wanted to see his mouth. Though he had desirously eaten sand, he said that he had not eaten. When he opened his mouth, she looked at his mouth and tongue keenly. When she saw the worlds in his mouth, she became fearful in her mind thinking that she had mistaken him for her son while he was the lord of all. Since krishNa didn’t want to be isolated, he made her forget all these, just as it has been said in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 1-1-7Ayar puththiran allan; arum dheyvam” (he is not the son of a cow-herd person; he is emperumAn, the difficult-to-see supreme entity).

puNNEdhum illai – “There will be no abscess. Your ear will get twisted [If I don’t apply the thread]. Oh, one who is complete with all auspicious qualities! Bear with me for a moment”. Since he was patient, she became joyous.

kaNNA – Oh, one who is easy to approach, for me!

en kAr mugilE – Oh, one who is a benefactor for me, by being like a monsoon cloud which pours out water irrespective of whether it is sea or land!

kadal vaNNA – Oh, one who has the complexion of an ocean, which is enjoyable for me!

kAvalanE – Oh, one who is my protector! Praising him in all these ways, she desires that he should consume milk.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr says through the verse kAvalanE that krishNa is his protector, after becoming protected by AzhwAr.

We shall next consider the 7th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
