Simple Translation
Four, five months after he incarnated, krishNa lifted his divine foot and kicked the monster SakatAsuran, killing him. He usurped the precious life of pUthanA, another monster, who had shiny, curved teeth and killed her. Oh women, who have curly hair! Look at the divine shoulders of such krishNa.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
nALgaL Or – About four five months after his divine incarnation. Since AzhwAr is a mangaLASAsanaparar (one who is constantly engaged with carrying out mangaLASAsanam (praising and wishing) for emperumAn), he does not specify the exact month after birth, but gives a vague period which could be construed as four months or five months or (four plus five) nine months or (four times five) twenty months etc, as a means for removing evil eyes cast on krishNa.
thALai … – a monster, Sakatan, had pervaded a wheel with the intention of killing krishNa, when krishNa was sleeping alone in a place, kicking his legs since he was feeling hungry and could not feel yaSOdhAp pirAtti’s bosom. The monster got caught between the kicking feet of krishNa and got annihilated. The term sAdip pOy refers to kicking.
vAL koL … – he also usurped the life of pUthanA, another monster, who had shiny, curved teeth, whose life was difficult to be usurped. This is in line with thirumangai AzhwAr mercifully saying in periya thirumozhi 1-3-1 “pEychchi perumulaiyUduyirai vaRRa vAngi uNda vAyan” (emperumAn, who has a divine mouth through which he drank, without leaving anything, the life of pUthanA through her huge bosoms). While pUthanA was killed first and only after that was sakatAsuran killed, the reason for changing the sequence here is not due to any uncertainty but due to overflowing enthusiasm [that krishNa had been able to destroy his enemies). thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that the reason for AzhwAr changing the order of annihilating pUthanA and sakatAsuran is because of his ability to see the earlier yugams [epochs] too [the events in each epoch get repeated; hence AzhwAr, who has been mercifully granted knowledge with devotion, without any trace of doubt by emperumAn, has seen all the killing of enemies]. Alternatively, he has composed the events in the order in which emperumAn had manifested the events to him.
thOLgaL … – yaSOdhAp pirAtti wants her friends to see the beauty of krishNa’s divine shoulders which he contracted when he drank the milk from pUthanA’s bosom. Oh, women who have curly locks! Come and have a look at his divine shoulders. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term suri kuzhal refers to the act of surrendering to emperumAn, controlling one’s mind.
We shall next consider the 12th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
