avathArikai (Introduction)
In the previous pAsuram, AzhwAr mentioned about krishNa’s activity which he carried out years later [of holding the mountain with his hand]. In this pAsuram, he recalls the activities which are not appropriate for a child of that age, by recounting them in the pathos of yaSOdhA, to women who are in her proximity.
kidakkil thottil kizhiya udhaiththidum
eduththuk koLLil marungai iRuththidum
odukkip pulgul udharaththE pAyndhidum
midukku ilAmaiyAl nAn melindhEn nangAy
Word-by-Word Meanings
nangAy – Oh women, who are complete with all the auspicious qualities!
kidakkil – if laid down (on the cradle)
thottil – cradle
kizhiya – to break up
udhaiththidum – he starts kicking
eduththuk koLLil – if he were kept on the waist [since he doesn’t like to be put inside the cradle]
marungai – waist
iRuththidum – he breaks
odukki – such that he cannot do any anything
pulgil – if he were kept close to the chest
udharaththu – in the stomach
pAyndhidum – he kicks
midukku – strength to put up with these activities
ilAmaiyAl – since [this child] does not have
nAn – I (his mother)
melindhEn – have become very thin.
Simple Translation
yaSOdhA tells the ladies among the herd-folk “Oh ladies who have all the auspicious qualities! If I have to put down the infant krishNa in the cradle, he kicks it such that it would break. If I hold him on my waist, since he does not like being put inside the cradle, he breaks my waist with his kicks. If I hold him tight to my chest such that he could not engage in any activity, he kicks the stomach region. Since the little krishNa does not have the strength to put up with his activities [of kicking hard objects], I have become thin”
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
kidakkil – if the infant krishNa were laid down in the cradle, he will keep kicking it until the cradle would break into pieces.
eEduththuk koLLil marungai iRuththidum – thinking “Kicking like this would not be apt for the softness of his divine legs”, if I pick him up and keep him on my waist, he will keep kicking my waist until the waist itself would break.
odukkip pulgil udharaththE pAyndhidum – thinking “Even this is not apt for his soft, divine form”, if I keep him close to my chest such that he cannot engage in any activity, he would still slip a bit and start kicking my stomach.
midukku ilAmaiyAL nAn melindhEn nangAy – I became very thin after thinking “This infant does not have the strength in him to put up with his activity of kicking repeatedly with those soft, divine feet”. The term nangAy refers to a group of women who were near yaSOdhA, even though it appears to address a single person. She appears to be hinting that they have all the auspicious qualities in them since they have sired children who act according to their age and have nurtured them that way, and not like krishNa, who is acting beyond his age.
We shall next consider the last pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
