Simple Translation
On the twelfth day from his [krishNa’s] birth, the herd-folk planted decorative flag-staffs in all directions, announcing to all, their victory [of having the great krishNa amidst them]. They carried in their arms the infant krishNa, who, in later years, will hold aloft the gOvardhana mountain which had many elephants which were in exultation. They displayed their bliss in this manner.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
paththu nALum kadandha iraNdA nAL – on the day of puNyAhavachanam [the day when the new-born child is given a name], which falls on the twelfth day after birth. Since AzhwAr is totally engaged with carrying out mangaLASAsanam [praising and protecting], he does not wish to reveal the details of krishNa’s birth and says – the twelfth day from birth [hiding from entities such as kamsan et al].
eththisaiyum saya maram kOdiththu – planting decorative flag-staffs in all four directions, to signify their victory [of having attained krishNa]
maththa mAmalai thAngiya maindhanai – the powerful child who held aloft the huge mountain that had many elephants which were in exultation. Since AzhwAr incarnated in the period much after the birth of krishNa, he has the liberty to identify the activities of krishNa which he carried out much later, with the child who had been born only twelve days earlier.
uththAnam seydhu ugandhanar AyarE – due to overflowing affection for krishNa, the herd-folk carried the infant krishNa, individually, in their hands, and became happy.
