Highlights from avathArikai (Introduction)
AzhwAr is saying “Is it only to the extent of not considering someone else as refuge? I don’t have any connection with thAmasa purusha (those who worship other dhEvathAs). I will not spend my time with anyone other than sAthvikas (those who are noble)” AzhwAr is saying that he won’t think about others as said in periya thirumozhi 11.6.7 “eNNAdha mAnidaththai” (Those people who don’t think about you) and as said in periya thirumozhi 7.4.4 “pErALan pErOdhum periyOrai oru kAlum pirigilEnE” (I will not separate even for a moment from the mahAthmAs who are praising bhagavAn).

Simple translation
Oh lord, who is residing in thirukkaNNapuram! I have no relationship with those who say “There is another god, different from SrIman nArAyaNa”. After I, the servitor, learnt your divine ashtAksharam, while it reveals many other principles, I understand as the meaning and confirm the principle of being an exclusive servitor of bhAgavathas who are your servitors.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
maRRum Or dheyvam uLadhu enRu iruppArOdu uRRilEn – I don’t have any connection with those who have contact with other dhEvathAs.
uRRadhum … – I did not abandon them and simply remained with you. When asked “Where did you learn about this practice, from whom?” AzhwAr says “This is what I think as the meaning for the first instruction [thirumanthram – ashtAksharam] you gave to me”. bhagavAn says “This gives many meanings. It talks about jIvAthmA’s true nature. It talks about my [paramAthmA’s] true nature. It talks about the relationship between the jIvAthmAs and me; it goes up to explaining about the kainkayryam which is the result of reaching me”. AzhwAr says “Though it talks about many principles, I am clear about the principle of ananyArha SEshathvam (my exclusive servitude towards you); that will only remain when we go up to manifesting our servitude towards your devotees”.
kaNNapuraththuRai ammAnE – Isn’t this the principle that you have come and taught here? In previous pAsurams also “kaNNapuraththuRai ammAnE” was present. If we try to do the same thing in this pAsuram also to maintain consistency, the syllable count will increase [for the pAsuram]. To avoid that we should recite [in the last line] “kaRRu nAn valladhu kaNNapuraththAnE“. Alternatively, to maintain consistency, we can recite as “kaNNapuraththuRai ammAnE! nin thiruvettezhuththum kaRRu nAn uRRadhum un adiyArkku adimai“. nanjIyar mercifully asked “When AzhwAr said ‘I am not simply being subservient to you [instead being subservient to your devotees]’, I wonder ‘How emperumAn’s divine heart feels?’ “, nampiLLai mercifully said “He became, as said in thiruvAimozhi 8.10.11 ‘allik kamalak kaNNan‘ (having eyes like a blossomed lotus flower)” As AzhwAr became, as said in thiruvAimozhi 8.10.10 “nIkkam illA adiyAr tham adiyAr adiyAr adiyAr em kOkkaL” (for my associates and me, the servitors who are enjoying such lord without any separation, are my lords), bhagavAn became as said in thiruvAimozhi 8.10.11 “allik kamalak kaNNan“.
The identity of a prapanna is :
- considering Sriya:pathi (divine consort of SrI mahAlakshmi) as upAyam (means) and upEyam (goal)
- remaining free from contact with dhEvathAntharams and connection with thAmasa purushas who are devotees of those other dhEvathAs
- being unable to sustain in separation from bhAgavathas
When the inherent qualities of an entity are not explicitly said, when the entity is mentioned, those inherent qualities are also considered to have been said.
In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
