Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
pOdhAr thAmaraiyAL – One who is having lotus flower which blossomed at the right time, as her abode. Or, one who is having lotus which is freshly blossomed flower, as her abode. pOdhu means time as well as flower.
pulavi – pulavi indicates SrI bhUmip pirAttiyAr. Alternative explanation – pulavi means separation [for subsequent union]. In the separation for pirAtti from bhagavAn, the nithyasUris enthusiastically pacify her/him. In such a case, if pirAtti and bhagavAn are having separation for subsequent union, at that time, as said in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 1-127 “raraksha dharmENa balEna cha” ((lakshmaNa vigilantly) protected (SrI rAma) (with an undespaired mind and) even by his virtue and strength), the nithyasUris will remove the romantic fight and pacify. Oh one who is the matter of enthusiasm for such nithyasUris!
kula vAnavar – Those who don’t move away from experiencing bhagavAn. As said in thiruvAimozhi 7.2.10 “vadivudai vAnOr” (for nithyasUris who are having matching form). When romantic fight happens with periya pirAttiyAr, nithyasUris eliminate that and pacify you. One who is object of that! kOdhA is used in place of kOthukulam (kuthUhalam). Alternative explanation – as in “pulavik kula vAnavar“, it is an adjective for nithyasUris. With this, it is explained that – though they are eternally residing with bhagavAn, they are unsatisfied with the experience as if they have not enjoyed him previously. In this manner, AzhwAr is talking about bhagavAn who is greater than all and controller of all, yet he went as a messenger minimising his own greatness, for the sake of his devotees.
kOdhil sengOl kudai mannar – Our pUrvAchAryas have mercifully explained this phrase as talking about dhuryOdhana et al or pANdavas. Oh one who went as a messenger having a palm-leaf tied to your neck amidst the kings dhuryOdhana et al, who usurped pANadavas’ umbrella, chowrie etc, and having orders (sceptre) which cannot be stopped by anyone, remaining under the pearl umbrella and ruling over the vast earth as the kings! Alternative explanation – by krishNa’s opinion, pANdavas are the real kings who have the sceptre.
thUmozhiyAy – krishNa asked dhuryOdhana et al “What are pANdavas and you planning to do?” They said “They have dharma (righteousness) and the result of that, which is heaven; they are five, and we are hundred of us; hence we need the whole earth for ourselves; hence we cannot even give them the piece of land measuring the tip of a needle”. krishNa said “If this is your opinion. the king (yudhishtira) who is eating whatever he gets, wearing whatever garments he gets, applying whatever sandal paste he gets, and remaining peaceful in all manners, is eager to become victorious in the battle”, showing his partiality towards his devotees. Because of speaking such words, oh one who is unstoppably shining radiantly in my heart!
vEdhA – Who is shining like this? One who is fully known from vEdham.
nin … – Instead of having to just hear from SAsthram, you are present in thiruviNNagar to be seen by our eyes. I surrender unto you – says AzhwAr.
