Simple translation
The very pure young moon, the ocean with jumping waves, the southern breeze which touched the cool, rejuvenating flowers, along with the anRil bird, gathered together as a group and tormented me to weaken and wither my heart; I remained sleepless when the mist is spread everywhere. You are not granting your mercy saying “Isn’t she like a helpless creeper?” Please carry me and make me reach the dhivyadhESam named thirukkuRungudi where emperumAn who is having the complexion which is similar to that of a kuvaLai flower and who has taken away my five types of knowledge (which are acquired through five types of senses), is firmly residing.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
thavaLa iLam piRai … – For me who desired to attain bhagavAn but could not do it, the entire place has become inimical.
thavaLa iLam piRai – Very pure, very youthful moon which is very attractive to be seen by everyone without taking their eyes off.
thuLLu munnIr – Like fire. As said in SrI rAmAyaNam “EshaivASamsathE lAnkAm” (This neela (a monkey leader) himself can destroy lankA), the ocean which is having droplets from waves coming out saying “Me! Me!”.
thaN malarth thenRalodu – Entering the rejuvenating flower. As said in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 1.72 “padhma kEsara samsrushta:” (fragrance carrying lotus pollens), the southern breeze which takes the pollens and fragrance without going deep into the flowers thinking that will lead to heat and appeared here. Along with that,
anRil – The anRil bird which cannot be explained with any adjective like the other entities mentioned here, and which can do sthrI vadham (destroy women).
onRi – Just as in a leaderless-nation, all the warlords will join together sending secret messages and surround all the four main gates.
When asked “What did all of these entities do after joining together?” parakAla nAyaki says,
thuvaLa … – My heart which is already flattened due to sorrow from separation is tormented to weaken and wither. Just as someone placing a tender shoot in fire, it is tormenting me. As it saw the weakness in the opposite person (me), it tormented me as if I am its abode.
sUzh … – Do I need any one now? [I just want to sleep] As said in periya thirumozhi 8.5.8 “ozhugu nuNpanikku odungiya pEdaiyai adanga anjiRai kOlith thazhuvu naLLiruL” (remaining alone in the pitch darkness when the overflowing mist causes the female bird to shrivel and the male bird embraces in the bottom portion of its wings, to subdue it), in the night when I should remain under the embrace of my hero, I am separated from him and being tormented by the harmful entities, and remaining sleepless.
ivaLum Or peN kodi enRu irangAr – He is not granting his mercy to us saying “Isn’t she a helpless person? Can she handle this?” Alternative explanation – he is thinking me to be like sIthAp pirAtti who remained separated from him for ten months. [I cannot handle such separation]
en nalam … – “ennalam aindhum” implies knowledge which is acquired through five senses viz ears, eyes. nose, tongue and skin. Alternative explanation – amudhanAr says that it is said in thirunedundhANdagam 25 “en nalanum en niRaivum” (My beauty, my humility etc).
kuvaLai … – These are the magical powders which he used to take away my aspects. Instead of this place where he has left me to have everything we see to become inimical towards us, carry me and place in his eternal abode [thirukkuRungudi] where all of these are favourable towards me.
