periyAzhwAr thirumozhi >> Fifth Centum

Previous

pravESam

In the earlier thirumozhi, AzhwAr enjoyed reciting the divine names of emperumAn, saying “sollalAm pOdhE un nAmam ellAm sollinEn” (when my senses and mind are intact, I recited all your divine names). Analysing the reason for losing out on these for a very long time, he determined that this was because of going after worldly pursuits, as mentioned in periya thirumozhi 1.1.2 “AviyE amudhE” (going after insignificant pleasures, calling them as “Oh, my life! Oh, one who is enjoyable for me like nectar!”) Feeling sorrowful over that which had been lost for a long time, he falls head over heels on periya perumAL, saying as mentioned in thirukkuRundhANdakam 12 “Aviyai aranga mAlai …” (with my faulty physical form and dirty mouth, I recited the divine names of emperumAn and feared, having indulged in a grave mistake) and as mentioned in thirumAlai 35 “AviyE amudhE endhan Aruyir anaiya endhAy” (You are my vital air and like nectar for me. You are my swAmy and the indwelling soul of my life, like nectar). Just as thirumangai AzhwAr and thoNdaradippodi AzhwAr had prayed to periya perumAL, periyAzhwAr too prays to emperumAn to bear with his faults and falls head over heels on periya perumAL, with his two senses [tongue and physical form] [in this thirumozhi].
In the svApadhESam, the following has been mentioned additionally: AzhwAr says [in this thirumozhi], that he, who is not qualified to recite his divine names [since he feels that he has impure physical form and tongue], still indulged in that and reviled emperumAn [though reciting emperumAn’s divine names is an act of praise, AzhwAr says that he had reviled emperumAn since he, with his impure tongue, had recited the divine names]. He beseeches emperumAn to bear with his faults and mercifully says as to how his senses fell head over heels in enjoying emperumAn.
