Simple Translation

You are the one, who is the causative entity; you remove the sorrows of those who meditate upon you constantly; you had annihilated the monster, madhu; you had removed the danger which befell the elephant SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn [from the crocodile]; you had lifted the gOvardhana hill, which has a variety of minerals, as an umbrella and protected [cows and herd-people] from hailstorm; you had  annihilated the elephant kuvalayApeedam, and become a benefactor; you have such an unlimited eminence that it is difficult to praise you [completely]. Oh, one who is the benefactor of all! You should grant your mercy on me such that I could take refuge under you and praise you forever.

vyAkhyAnam

vaNNamAl varaiyE – considering the mountain, which had a variety of minerals, as the means. Oh, one who lifted the mountain, which you considered as the protector, as mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 5.10.5 “Ayar oruppaduththa adisil uNdadhum” (emperumAn consumed the food, as gOvardhana hill, prepared, with intent, by cowherds, for offering to indhran, the head of celestial entities), as an umbrella and protected from the hailstorm!

madhusUdhA – Oh, one who removed the first weed, monster madhu [first weed – first enemy].

kaNNanE – oh, one who is the easiest to approach!

kari kOL viduththAnE – Oh, one who removed the danger which came for SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn!

kAraNA – he incarnated, only after creating all the worlds. It is pertinent to recall thiruvAimozhi 2.8.1 “iruvar avar mudhalum thAnE” (emperumAn is the cause for the creation and sustenance of brahmA and rudhra).

kaLiRatta pirAnE – Oh, one who annihilated the elephant, kuvalayApeedam!

eNNuvAr idaraik kaLaivAnE – Oh, one who removes entities which are inimical to meditating upon you. Even as one thinks to pray to emperumAn to grant one parabhakthi, paragyAna and paramabhakthi [knowledge about emperumAn, attaining emperumAn and inability to sustain if separated from emperumAn, respectively], oh one, who removes the inimical entities for these!

Eththarum perum kIrththiyinAnE – Oh, one who has unlimited auspicious qualities, which will never reduce however much one experiences them!

naNNi … – You should mercifully grant me mercy such that I am able to praise you, without any difference in the states of whether I attain you or I do not attain you. The pAsuram should be rearranged as kAraNA – eNNuvAr idaraik kaLaivAnE – madhusUdhA – kari kOL viduththAnE – kaNNanE – vaNNa mAl varaiyE kudaiyAga mAri kAththavanE – kaLiRatta pirAnE – Eththarum perum kIrththiyinAnE – naNNi nAn unnai nAL thoRum Eththum nanmai aruL seyyum, pirAnE to get sequential meanings. Through this pAsuram, asAdhAraNa rakshakathvam [distinguished protection given while annihilating kuvalayApeedam, while protecting SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn and while protecting the cows and herd-people by lifting gOvardhana hill], sAdhAraNa rakshakathvam [general protection given, when he gave all the entities physical forms and sensory organs, at the time of creating the worlds] and prApyathvam [that he is the entity to be attained, through eNNarum kIrththiyinAnE and  pirAn] have been mentioned.

In the svApadhESam, it is mentioned that AzhwAr tells emperumAn “You should shower your mercy on me, who cannot sustain without praising you, to attain you and praise you every day. You should mercifully create eminence for me”

We shall next consider the 9th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
