Oh, one who is having the auspicious glance of periya pirAttiyAr who is eternally residing on the beautiful, vast flower which is filled with beetles, as your sustenance; oh, one who revealed the four vEdhams; oh lord who is residing in the dhivyadhESam named thirukkaNNapuram! What are you planning to do for me, who likes you very much and is desiring to serve you? You should tell.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

vaNdAr … – periya pirAttiyAr is having a beautiful lotus flower which is expansive enough for her to stay comfortably and is having a swarm of beetles spread over it; oh one who is having such periya pirAttiyAr’s glance as your sustenance etc!

unnai – You,who are together wirh her. She is not liking brahmachAri emperumAn.

ugandhu ugandhu – liking very much.

unRanakkE thoNdAnERku – Just as a child will serve in the togetherness of both the mother and father, AzhwAr is desiring to serve in the togetherness of periya pirAttiyAr and bhagavAn. For me, who has the desire to serve in the togetherness of pirAtti and him.

en seyginRAy sollu – What are you mercifully planning to do? Tell me. AzhwAr is considering both prApya (goal) and prApaka (means) in their togetherness. You, who are not lacking anything in upAya bhAvam (being the means), should tell me as to what you are mercifully planning to do.

en seyinRAy sollu – He is not considering his own liking as a reason for the result attained; since he is considering bhagavAn’s joy as the reason for the result, he is asking bhagavAn to tell.

nAl vEdham kaNdAnE – Remembering the sequence of vEdhams during the deluge and revealing the same subsequently – this is what is known as seeing/revealing. In the case of vEdham, which is nithyam, there is nothing more than sAkshAthkAram (visualisation) [i.e. there is no creation]. Alternative explanation – siRiyAththAn would say that bhattar mercifully explained in this manner – “This is not karthari (active voice), but is karmaNi (passive voice)”, that is, vEdham revealed that bhagavAn is both prApyam (goal) and prApakam (means).

kaNNapuraththu uRai ammAnE – Not just hearing in pramANam (authentic literature), you have arrived in thirukkaNNapuram in an easily approachable manner, to be seen and enjoyed by us; you should tell.

In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
