Simple Translation
narakAsuran was of the firm belief that no one could kill him, since he had the strength of his subordinates and his own shoulders. He had brought sixteen thousand one hundred celestial girls, handpicking them, in order to marry them. krishNa, analysing ways to kill him, surrounded him such that he could not escape, killed him, took the sixteen thousand one hundred celestial girls and married them. He has the divine form of an ocean. thirumAlirum sOlai is his divine mountain. It is also the mountain where different types of trees, such as mast wood, golden champak, Indian kino tree, which grows on dry lands, and the silk-cotton tree, grow in an orderly manner, looking like golden garlands being swirled.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
mannu naragan thannai – narakAsuran, was remaining firm that “Due to the strength of our people and my own shoulder strength, there is no trouble for us”. Alternatively, narakAsuran was standing firmly, opposing emperumAn. In other words, he enslaved celestial entities, took the celestial women with him, seized the ear rings of athithi, the mother of indhran, making indhran to roam around, without a state, leading to indhran coming to SrImadh dhwArakA and complaining to krishNa to help him immediately.
sUzhpOgi vaLaiththu eRindhu – after indhran came and appealed to him, krishNa decided in his divine mind “Let us annihilate narakAsuran”. He analysed in his divine mind the manner in which he should destroy narakAsuran. He took sathyabhAmaip pirAtti, on garuda, adorned himself with all the divine weapons, starting with the divine disc and mercifully went to prAgjyOthishpuram. He surrounded narakAsurAn such that he could not escape and then killed him. sUzh refers to analysing. vaLaiththal refers to rendering him without any escape route. eRidhal refers to severing [narakAsuran]. This refers to severing him with his divine disc.
kanni magaLir thammaik kavarndha – krishNa took hold of the sixteen thousand one hundred celestial girls, who had been handpicked by narakAsuran, from various places where he had waged battles, with an intention to marry them all. He took them to SrImadh dhwArakA and married all of them, making them as his consorts.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that krishNa analysed in his divine mind “Let us render ourselves apt for the sixteen thousand celestial girls and serve them”. sUzhpOgi, apart from analysing, would also refer to the person who carries out that act [of analysing].
kadal vaNNan malai – It is the mountain which is the permanent dwelling place for krishNa, who has the divine complexion of an ocean, due to his happiness over protecting indhran et al, after annihilating narakAsuran and marrying the celestial women, imprisoned by narakAsuran, making them happy.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that he got his divine complexion, after accepting the sixteen thousand celestial ladies.
punnai … – the punnai [mast wood] tree, which has golden flowers, the golden champaka tree, the Indian kino tree, which grows on dryland and the silk-cotton tree blossom together, standing in an orderly manner. This gives an appearance of golden garlands swirled around thirumalaiyAzhwAr [the divine mountain of thirumAlirum sOlai]. This is the divine mountain which has gardens, and is the mountain of kadal vaNNan [emperumAn].
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that due to the presence of different types of trees [acting as a decoration for the divine mountain], the pAsuram implies that it is the divine abode where people with noble hearts gather together.
We shall next consider the 4th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
