Simple translation
The strong chakravarthith thirumagan (SrI rAma, the son of the emperor) who drew his beautiful yet cruel bow, which is having arrow that is blowing resounding fire to burn the ancient ocean having tumultuous whitish waves, is not coming; what can I do? The shining hot sun has set; I, the sinner, am having vast eyes which are matching with each other and are not sleeping. I am not seeing the way to spend the blackish unit named nAzhigai (24 minutes) of the night, which is more than the duration of a brahmA’s day, kalpa.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
muriyum … – There is the ocean which is ancient water body that is having tumultuously roaming whitish water (waves). That,
thIppada – To burn. vikrama chOzha dhEvar would say “Is this some kind of a haystack!”
muzhangu – Blowing fire to make noise. As said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam SlOkam 46.22 “dhIptha pAvaka sankASai: Sithai: kAnchanabhUshaNai: l na thvAmichchAmyaham dhrashtum rAmENa nihatham Sarai: ll” (I do not wish to see you killed by SrI rAma, whose arrows are like burning fire, sharp and decorated with gold), having beautiful bow which is having beautiful arrow which is blowing fire. SrI rAma, who is having such strength, is not coming.
eriyum vem kadhir thuyinRadhu – Sun, who,due to his brightness, makes others see the objects and brings them peace, has set; serving ISvara (SrIman nArAyaNa) fully, at some point, he also set out to sleep.
pAviyEn iNai nedum kaN thuyilA – If sun, who gives sight to the entire world, can sleep, why can’t I do it?
kariya – Since the night, which is not liked by her, is dark in colour, she is asking “Is the nAzhigai which is night’s part, also has dark complexion?” Alternatively – “Very cruel nAzhigai”. Another explanation – that sandhyA kAlam is a very dark time.
kazhiyumARu aRiyEn – I don’t know how it will be exhausted ever. We have heard that in the past, some kalpas were destroyed. But now even the nAzhigai is not withdrawing.
