Simple Translation
Oh, the son of vasudhEvar! kamsan, who has wicked intelligence, is angry with you. When you are alone, he will catch you such that you would not be able to escape from him. After that, I will not live. Words spoken by mothers have to be necessarily followed by children. I have said this such that everyone would know about it. Even if you have to go for playing, do not go alone. Oh, one who is like an auspicious lamp for thiruvAyppAdi! Come and consume milk from my bosoms.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
thIya bundhik kanjan – kamsan has a malignant attitude. He is a killer of children. Just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 5-3-1 “makkaL aRuvaraik kallidai mOdha” (hitting the six children born ahead of you against rock and destroying them), kamsan is a great sinner who had killed six children born before krishNa by hitting their heads against rock.
For the verse thIyabundhi …, thiruvAimozhip piLLai says: for innumerable births, due to carrying the effects of past deeds, due to friendship with people of poor conduct, due to listening to the counsel of wicked ministers, due to not listening to the wise words of minister akrUrar, not having a knowledge of his own, despite having been born in the clan of kings, due to not having the fortune of seeing emperumAn until then, due to not going in the path of righteousness, which results in harming everyone, due to having stayed in his mother’s womb as a result of all these faults, AzhwAr refers to kamsan as thIyabundhdhik kanjan. thIya bundhi – being firm in following the path of destruction for self, due to his ego and possessiveness. Such a person, with all these characteristics, is having anger towards you, without any reason. He has as his followers, those who follow the path of wrongful methods, and who take bewildering forms [such as animals, plants etc]. kamsan lets these followers to enter places where you go alone. If you get caught in their net of deception, I [referring to yaSOdhAp pirAtti] will not survive; I will perish. sOrvu – to go alone.
un mEl sinam udaiyan – Since he had heard the voice of an aSarIri [one without any form] that “the one conceived [by dhEvakip pirAtti and vasudhEvar] on the eighth occasion is your enemy” and subsequently since dhurga [the girl child who exchanged places with krishNa] had also confirmed it, kamsan thought “Our enemy has escaped from us and has entered a place where we cannot enter. We should somehow harm him” and was very angry towards you.
sOrvu pArththu – waiting for a time when you are without anyone to come with you, viz. when you are roaming alone.
mAyam thannAl valaip padukkil – if he catches you by sending monstrous entities with deceptive forms such as animals or as botanical entities, in order to harm you, to places where you normally go to, in such a manner that you could not escape.
vAzha killEn – I will be unable to live after that; I will perish.
vAsudhEvA – even a gentle person such as vasudhEvar had to undergo imprisonment because of you [since the aSarIri said that the person conceived on the eighth occasion by dhEvakip pirAtti and vasudhEvar would kill kamsan].
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that kamsan is harming gentle people such as vasudhEvar on account of krishNa. If they see you, will the monsters let loose by kamsan leave you harmlessly?
thAyar … – you should behave in line with the words of your mother. In other words, due to being apt and being spoken with affection, the words of a mother are to be necessarily followed.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here: Earlier, AzhwAr had referred to krishNa as a lion cub, who had been sired by dhEvakip pirAtti. Now AzhwAr says that he is the son of yaSOdhAp pirAtti. He cites a few pramANams (authentic texts) such as SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 58-31 “pithruthvam nOpalakshayE” [lakshmaNa tells minister sumanthran to inform emperor dhaSaratha that he does not consider dhaSaratha as his father], perumAL thirumozhi 7.3 “undhaiyAvan enRuraippa” (when asked as to who was his father, krishNa pointed out to nandhagOpar) and “nandhagOpan maindhan” (the son of nandhagOpar), to show that krishNa indicated subtly as to who his father was. Just as krishNa had listened to the words of dhEvakip pirAtti on the day that he incarnated [by hiding his divine weapons, crown, four hands etc], AzhwAr tells krishNa that he should listen to his words too [in the pathos of yaSOdhAp pirAtti]. I had mentioned these on several occasions, for many people to know [instead of saying them in secret]. He tells krishNa not to venture alone, even if it is for playing with friends.
sARRich chonnEn pOga vENdA – these words were not mentioned in any secretive manner. I had said this openly such that everyone would know about it. Even for the purpose of playing with your friends, do not go alone.
Ayar pAdikku aNi viLakkE – Oh, one who is like an auspicious lamp for thiruvAyppAdi! aNi – beauty. Through this, it is emphasised that it is not only for her [yaSOdhAp pirAtti], but the entire thiruvAyppAdi will be plunged into darkness if anything untoward happens to you [krishNa].
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here: AzhwAr queries krishNa whether harm would come only to AzhwAr should anything untoward happen to krishNa. Oh, one who shines with your auspicious qualities such as beauty etc such that you are the object of intense focus for those in this town, like an auspicious lamp! Is there such a lamp which does not require inducing it and which does not perish? In actual practice, such a lamp is present amidst the herd-folk. While guessing something requires that the particular object had to have been seen at some point of time [in the past], seeing in reality [seeing the object right in front of one’s eyes] does not require any guesswork. Thus, since krishNa has been seen right in front of their eyes, by the herd-folk, with both conditions of no inducement and non-perishing being present in one divine form [of krishNa], he is referred to as the aNiviLakku [the beautiful lamp] for thiruvAyppAdi.
amarndhu — – leaving aside your hastiness, come securely and consume this milk which has got secreted only for you.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that while krishNa may scurry to one place or the other for his regular activities, when invited to consume milk from the bosoms, he should let go of all his hurriedness and come slowly, at normal pace. Now, thiruvAimozhip piLLai raises a query as to what is bosom milk for AzhwAr. It is the flow of knowledge which is admixed with devotion, which enables carrying out apt mangaLASAsanam at all places, at all times and in all situations. For emperumAn who cultivates the crop of devotion, the sustenance, nurturing and enjoyment are all this devotion only, which has matured from knowledge.
