Simple Translation

yaSOdhAp pirAtti sang lullabies to put to sleep kaNNan, who consumed the [milk from] bosom of pUthanA such that she perished, and who has a dark, divine form. periyAzhwAr, who incarnated in SrI villibuththUr, and who is the most eminent among brAhmaNas, who have vEdhams, which have eminent words, as their identity and living together in SrI villibuththUr, composed those lullabies mercifully into pAsurams. Those who are capable of reciting these pAsurams, without any shortcoming, will not have any distress.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

vanjanai … – just as it has been said in periya thirumozhi 1-5-6thAyAy vandha pEy” (the fiend who came as mother), pUthanA came, hiding her fiendish form and came in the form of yaSOdhAp pirAtti, krishNa’s mother. Just as she came as a mother, krishNa too, like her son, drank milk from her bosom such that she perished.

anjana vaNNanai – this verse mentions about the radiance which came to his divine form, on knowing that the enemy [of his followers] [pUthanA] has been annihilated.

Aychchi … – the manner in which yaSOdhAp pirAtti, his mother, sang lullabies.

senjol … – since those who live in SrI villibuththUr speak only truth, they have vEdhams, which speak only truth, as their identity. periyAzhwAr, who is the leader of brAhmaNas in SrI villibuththUr, mercifully composed [yaSOdhAp pirAtti’s words into] pAsurams. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that after periyAzhwAr had established the true supreme being, all the meanings in vEdhams, which were hitherto hidden, became clear to the brAhmaNas residing in SrI villibuththUr, as a result of which they entered the divine mind of periyAzhwAr. For this reason, they are referred to as senjol maRaiyavar. He further says that pattan sol refers to the words of a favourable person.

enjAmai … – there is no distress for those who are capable of reciting these pAsurams, without any shortcoming. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that for those who are capable of reciting these pAsurams with the pathos of periyAzhwAr, there is no distress. Instead of saying idar illai, AzhwAr says illai idar, similar to saying drushtA sIthA (saw sIthA, as revealed by hanuman to SrI rAma) and na ma: (not mine, as mentioned in nthirumanthram). idar refers to not taking refuge under periyAzhwAr’s affection. Since that idar will disappear on its own, he says illai idar.

We shall next consider the pravESam of next thirumozhi.
