Oh one who is having the bow and who destroyed lankA which is abundant with wealth, forts and the ocean! Oh one who is eternally residing in thiruviNNagar! I surrendered unto you

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

When [emperumAn] asked “Would you not follow the sense organs which are meant for gArhasthya (gruhasthASrama – married life), desire the aspects which are desired by those senses? In this case why should you worry?” AzhwAr responds,

kallA … – Only when those senses desire to see you [referring to emperumAn] and hear you, they are bound by me. Instead, they are all illiterate [in not desiring for you]. They are like rAvaNa. Those senses will try to rule over us and kill us, and will let not let us take the path of goodness. I am unable to take the path shown by them. That is – enjoying worldly pleasures based on sound, etc; as I think about the disaster which is to be faced in future, I cannot engage in such activities.

When asked “If the sense organs control us without being able to be freed by anyone, is there anything I can do?” AzhwAr says

mallA … – Don’t you have the ability to eliminate by submission towards my senses? Did you not say “If you cannot control your senses, place your heart on me?”

When asked “Where did you see me use my ability?” AzhwAr says

mal amar … – Oh one who is expert in wrestling to destroy the strength of the wrestlers to have them killed in the wrestling fight!

mallal … – He is capable of killing the enemies in wresting fight as well as in direct war. Is it as difficult as killing rAvaNa who did not understand that sIthA is the mother for all, to eliminate my submission towards my senses? Seeing the protection of the town which has unlimited wealth and control, thiruvadi (hanuman) said in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 49.17 “ahO vIryam ahO dhairyam ahO sathvam ahO dhyuthi: | ahO rAkshasa rAjasya sarvalakshaNa yukthathA ||” (How valiant! How brave! How strong! How radiant! How superior this rAkshasa king’s marks are!). Seeing the presence of rAvaNa along with his wives, hanuman thought “yadhIdhruSI rAgava dharmapathnI” (if sIthA were like this), if only rAvaNa agreed for such presence of perumAL (SrI rAma) and sIthAp pirAtti in this manner, this wealth and control will remain in tact for him. Oh one who is having the bow which destroyed lankA which has the fort and the ocean as another protective layer!

nin … – When bhagavAn says “To use my bow, you did not come to lankA and show your presence there” AzhwAr says “Did you destroy that enemy and left for elsewhere? Have you not entered here in thiruviNNagar by deceiving others?”
