mahAbali’s son, vANan, had imprisoned his daughter, ushai, and her beloved, anirudhdhan, the grandson of krishNa, in a prison. krishNa, on hearing this, went to that place, destroyed the prison, and retrieved anirudhdhan as well as ushai. thirumAlirum sOlai is the divine mountain, where that krishNa, who is youthful, dwells desirously. It is also the mountain, where, hilly tribe women sing, in kurunji tune, regarding krishNa, who was born in the clan of herd-people and who had divine bath [gOvindha pattAbhishEkam], and also dance.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

mAvali … – the place where ushai, the daughter of mahAbali’s son, vANan, was. Through this, the strength of vANan, who was prideful, and the protection that he had arranged to match ushai’s distinction are shown.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that using his grandson as a pretext, krishNan destroyed the protection arranged in the private quarters of ushai, the daughter of vANan, who was king mahAbali’s son.

kAvalaik kattazhiththa – krishNa went to that place, the private quarters, where the father had arranged protection for his daughter. It is also the place, where his grandson, anirudhdhAzhwAn had been held; he destroyed the prison. It is due to the reason that vANan had kept krishNa’s grandson, anirudhdhAzhwAn in prison, that krishNa went to vANapuram and defeated vANan. It was after krishNa defeated vANan that usahi became anirudhdhan’s servitor.

thankikkALai karudhum malai – just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 10.2.8kAmanaip payandha kALai” (krishNa, who did not lose his youth, even after creating kAman, the lord of love, cupid), krishNa had a unique youthfulness, even after begetting kAman. It is the mountain where he resides permanently, thinking “More than paramapadham, this is our place to reside”

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that he was a unique youth, viz. even after siring kAman, he remained as a twenty-five year old, just as he is in paramapadham. karudhum malai – he desires thirumAlirum sOlai, more than paramapadham and resides here, desirously.

kOvalar gOvindhanai – being born in the clan of herd-people who protect cattle, and being one among them. One, who had undergone gOvindhAbhishEkam [after indhra’s hailstorm, when he came and apologized to krishNa, kAmadhEnu, the celestial cow, to make amends for indhra’s ill-advised fury, carried out a divine bath for krishNa. This is referred to as gOvindha pattAbhishEkam].

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that even if one were an expert in protecting cattle, one has to be born in the clan of herd-folk.

kuRa mAdhargaL – women, belonging to the hilly tribes.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that if the tribe men sing mangaLASAsanam for emperumAn, the women of the tribe too would sing the same. The sounds of thiruppallANdu will reverberate throughout the mountain.

paNkurinjip pAvoli pAdi Adi nadam payilum mAlirum sOlai adhE – in the kurinji rAgam [tune], the women of hilly tribes will sing songs, and appropriate to the song, they will also dance. It is that divine mountain, where they carry out this. It is the place where krishNa, the unique youthful person, dwells forever.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that they will sing songs such as “nandhan madhalaiyaik kAkuththanai navinRu” (singing about kaNNan, the son of SrI nandhagOpar and about the divine son of dhaSaratha chakravarthi, who is from the clan of kakuthstha).
