Simple Translation
krishNa is capable of keeping his divine mouth on the bosom of the fiend pUthanA, who had a cruel form, such that she was killed. He has a divine complexion with a dark form. If you are searching for the place where he is dwelling in an apt manner, there are those who had seen him, sitting on his throne, surrounded by his sixteen thousand [and one hundred] consorts, in dhwArakA, where the ocean is throwing up droplets of water.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
pollA vadivudaip pEychchi thunja – being a fiend, her form was dried up, with raw nerves and bones jutting out, in a cruel manner [that was her normal form]. Such fiend to be killed …
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when a fiend is mentioned, it goes without saying that the form will be cruel and that the fiend will be ignorant of anything which is good. When such is the case, the reason for saying “pollA vadivu” is to emphasise that her cruelty was such that the cruelty and ignorance of other fiends in that place would be insignificant, when compared to her. Her nature was such that she had a dried-up form with nerves and bones showing up, and nothing good present in her mind, which was full of deceit. During those times [when she had that fiendish form], she was roaming around, with her life intact. When she analysed ways to kill krishNa, and applied poison on her bosoms and came in the form of his mother, he was capable of knowing the difference in her bosom [compared to his mother’s] and yet kept his divine mouth. puNar – analyse. He was capable of keeping his divine mouth, with a huge desire; knowing the purity of his childishness and to keep his mouth innocently [to make her believe that he is an innocent child and to offer her bosom].
puNar mulai vAy madukka vallAnai– She hid that form, and came in the form matching krishNa’s mother, yaSOdhAp pirAtti, as mentioned in periya thirumozhi 1.3.1 “peRRa thAy pOl vandha pEychchi” (the fiend who came in the form of the mother, who gave birth to him). From the bosoms which had joined with her form, she gave him milk, as if she could not sustain herself if she hadn’t given him milk. krishNa too, as if he would be unable to sustain himself had he not taken milk from her, with a huge desire, kept his mouth on her bosom. One, who was capable of doing that. Just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 2.10.6 “uLLaththin uLLE avaLai uRa nOkki” (looking at her steadfastly, in his divine heart, knowing that she has come to harm him), even as she came, he knew her deceptive thought; just as she gave him milk, thinking of herself as his mother, he too took that milk, as if he were her son, and killed her. This is the meaning of the term vallAnai.
mA maNi vaNNanai – He drank her poisoned milk, as if it were nectar, as mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 1.5.9 “vidap pAl amudhAy amudhu seydhitta” (one who drank that poisoned milk as nectar). Since he protected himself, in the bargain, from her, his divine form became splendorous, like a blackish gemstone.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as it has been mentioned in periya thirumozhi 8.10 4 “uNNA nanju uNdu ugandhAyai” (krishNa felt happy in his divine mind after consuming that poison which could not be taken by anyone), if the person offers without anyaSEshathvam [being a servitor to anyone else, viz. what has been offered is exclusively for him], it does not matter even if it is poison. After consuming that milk [with poison], his form became splendorous, as mentioned in mudhal thiruvandhAdhi 11 “pEy mulai nanju UNAga uNdAn“ (he drank that poison as if it were his food).
maruvum idam nAdudhirEl – If you are searching to find him, where he dwells, with his divine mind fitting aptly.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that unlike the fiend [who came there to kill krishNa], if you wish to see him, to be with him, getting uplifted, and uplifting him too [he will get uplifted if he sees his followers coming exclusively for him] …
pallAyiram perum dhEvimArodu – after the annihilation of monster naraka, he married the sixteen thousand [and one hundred] [celestial] girls, who had been imprisoned by naraka]. Each of the sixteen thousand [and one hundred] girls was distinguished. Since the number of girls was not one thousand or two thousand, but sixteen thousand [and one hundred], the verse says pallAyiram, thousands of.
pauvam eRi thurvarai – In Srimadh dhwArakA, where the ocean was pushing out droplets of water inland, in order to remove the ennui of those living there.
ellArum …– There are people who had seen him, sitting on his throne, with happiness, surrounded by all his consorts.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that he was sitting on the throne, surrounded by his sixteen thousand [and one hundred] consorts. He was sitting, limited within that throne, and made his consorts happy as if they were all sitting along with him, on that throne. There are people who had seen this.
We shall next consider the 7th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
