Simple Translation
Due to changes in breathing, one’s mouth will droop to one side, causing pain. Eyes will sink deeply, rolling in a whirl, with water flowing. Mother, father and wife will stand on one side each, crying out loudly for the person [who is in his final moments]. Before fire is set to the person, from another side, if the person considers emperumAn, who has reddish eyes, to be the relative in all manner, without any cause [other relatives such as mother, father et al, come in one’s life, on account of karma, while emperumAn is the relative, without any such cause], without mixing up with other relatives, and hold on to him, there will be no problem on account of messengers of yama, with their cruel punishments, and the person would get uplifted [from samsAram]
vyAkhyAnam
vAyoru pakkam vAngi vaippa – Due to changes in breathing during final stages, mouth distorts to one side.
vArndha nIrkkuzhik kaNgaL mizhaRRa – While he cries, thinking “I am leaving my relatives and going”, as he sees the messengers of yama, his eyes, due to the weight of his fear, will sink deeply, whirling.
thAyoru pakkam … – those who had given birth to him, and those, who he gave birth to, would sit by his side and cry out. Subsequently …
thI oru pakkam sErvadhan munnam – before the final rites are performed on him
sengaN mAlodum – sarvESvaran, who has vAthsalyam [motherly forbearance] and vyAmOham [infatuation with his followers] [the term sengaN refers to vAthsalyam and the term mAl refers to infatuation with followers; alternatively, mAl would refer to sarvESvaran, and sengaN would refer to both vAthsalyam and vyAmOham]
chikkenach chuRRamAy – those, who are capable of holding on to emperumAn as all kinds of relatives, without any cause.
oru pakkam niRka vallArkku – those, who are capable of holding on to him as everything, and not confusing with the worldly relatives [who happen to be relatives due to past karma].
arava dhaNdaththilum uyyalum AmE – they can escape from the messengers of yama and their cruel punishments, and uplift themselves. AzhwAr says that those, who attain emperumAn, could uplift themselves, as mentioned in thiruviruththam 95 “mAdhAvinaip pidhuvaith thirumAlai vaNanguvanE” (I will attain the consort of SrI mahAlakshmi; he is affectionate towards me, like a mother, and is also well-intentioned towards me, like a father) as well as in thiruvAimozhi 5.1.8 “sElEy kaNNiyarum perum selvamum nanmakkaLum mElAth thAy thandhaiyarum avarE” (hereafter, it is only emperumAn who is to considered as damsels with beautiful eyes, great wealth, children with good qualities, mother and father, who are considered to be great due to their priyam (love) and hitham (concern for well-being)).
We shall next consider the last pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
