Highlights from avathArikai (Introduction)

bhagavAn says “I am pleased [with you]; strong recommendation is also present; I am easily approachable. Even if all of these are there, unless you give up all of your external attachments and come as akinchana (not having any other upAyam), your desire will not be fulfilled” AzhwAr responds “I have eliminated my shortcomings; you please ensure that you don’t have any shortcomings”.

Simple translation

Oh lord, who is residing in thirukkaNNapuram which is inhabited by those who are learned in all SAsthrams! I, the servitor, won’t desire any of these persons such as parents, relatives as my relatives; I have no attachment towards other persons; hence, I have surrendered unto you only; hence, having the consideration “He is related to me” in your divine heart, you mercifully shower your grace to me.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

peRRAr … – I won’t consider others as my relative.

maRRArum paRRilEn – I have no one, even who say “Alas! He has no one else”; bhagavAn says “Even if you don’t have others, don’t you have yourself for you?” AzhwAr says “I am a bottleneck for myself”.

AdhalAl nin adaindhEn – For someone who has no hold, when he surrenders , he needs a ground. SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 38.35 “satham nipathitham bhUmau saraNya: saraNAgatham I vadhArhamapi kAkuthsa: krupayA paryapAlayath II” (even though kAkAsuran, who fell to the ground and surrendered, deserved to be killed, SrI rAma, through his grace, saved him, as he is the refuge).

uRRAn enRu uLLaththu vaiththu – Considering in your divine heart “He went away from me and suffered a lot”, you should shower your grace towards me. Alternative explanation – Considering in your divine heart “Isn’t our relationship, which cannot be severed by me, is in your hands? Are these relationships which he abandoned previously, us only?”, you should mercifully shower your grace on me.

bhagavAn asks “Why should I do it in this way?” AzhwAr says

kaRRAr … – Are there persons in the town where you are residing, who have taken some manuscripts and studied? Should the wise persons not feel the pain [and advise you]? jIyar would mercifully say that learned persons would instruct as in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 116-44 “AryENa – karuNam – kAryam” (By a noble person – mercy – should be shown). [The purport of this SlOkam] Why are you analysing the unnecessary aspects [faults] in them? While we have to act according to our nature [of being merciful], why should we analyse the faults which cannot be ignored?

In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
