Simple Translation

krishNa was surrounded by his friends, holding umbrellas made of peacock feathers, to protect his divine form. They decorated his curled divine locks with peacock feathers. I saw him singing and dancing in front of the houses of these herd-boys. Apart from him, I will not allow you people to look for a suitable consort for me. Think in your minds and give me in marriage to the victorious one who is the amazing emperumAn, residing in thirumAlirunjOlai, who made me as his. If you do not give me this way, it will lead to confusion for you all.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

suRRi ninRu Ayar thazhaigaL ida – herd-boys, who are krishNa’s divine and dear friends, surround him, holding umbrellas made of peacock feathers, to prevent rain and sunshine from falling on him.

suruL pangi neththiraththAl aNindhu – combing the divine locks and decorating the locks with the eyes of peacock feathers.

paRRI ninRu Ayar tham kadaith thalaiyE pAdavum Adavum kaNdEn – I saw krishNa, with his heart fitting well, standing near the houses of herd boys, singing and dancing. paRRi ninRa – standing near the houses of herd-folks. Ayar kadaith thalai – our houses

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that thiruvAyppAdi is the dwelling place for krishNa, who severs the servitude of the people living there, to any other deity.

anRIppin maRRoruvarkku ennaip pEsal ottEn – apart from him, who is [eminent] like this, I will not allow you people to speak about my marriage with anyone else. If you think about someone, I cannot do anything. However, if you speak about that, I will perish. She speaks in a manner which is similar to ANdAL in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 1.5mAnidavarkku enRu pEchchup padil vAzhagillEn” (I will not survive if you speak about marrying me to a person in human species). In order to hear from her mouth as to who she is referring to you, when she was asked “Who is that person, apart from whom you will not marry anyone else?” she says…

mAlirum sOlai em mAyarkku allAl – The reason for saying this way, instead of saying “Apart from krishNa” is to trace the lineage of krishNa. When speaking about lineage, the gOthram [starting point of a clan] has to be mentioned. She says that she is referring to the one who is with amazing power, who made her as exclusively his own, just as he made thirumAlirum sOlai as exclusively his. More than thiruvAyppAdi, it is thirumAlirunjOlai which is exclusive for emperumAn. It is only during the time of incarnation that he chose thiruvAyppAdi whereas his permanent residence is only in thirumAlirunjOlai.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when tracing the origin of krishNAvathAram, instead of saying paramapadham, AzhwAr is saying thirumAlirunjOlai. It is in thirumAlirunjOlai that emperumAn has completeness of his auspicious qualities, as mentioned in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 9.3thiru viLaiyAdu thiN thOL thirumAlirunjOlai nambi” (the one, who has completeness of auspicious qualities, has firm shoulders which are the playing arena for SrI mahAlakshmi). She tells the people nearby to unite her with the one who resides in thirumAlirunjOlai, an entity who ANdAL too, spoke about in her nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 9.6mAlirunjOlai nambikku – vAy nErndhu parAvi vaiththEn” (for the one who has completeness of qualities and who resides in thirumAlirunjOlai, I proffered through my words…). While the herd-girls live for krishNa only, AzhwAr mercifully speaks about thirumAlirunjOlai only.

koRRavanukkukoRRam-victorious. Even if you do not give me [in marriage] to him, he is one who will not let go of one who is “his”. He is one who took rukmiNip pirAtti [SrI mahAlakshmi] as his when arrangements were being made for marrying her to SiSupAlan, as mentioned in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 11.9aNNAndhirukkavE Angu avaLaik kaippidiththa” (when SiSupAlan was looking at the sky, emperumAn took hold of rukmiNip pirAtti’s hand].

ivaLAm enRu eNNik kodumingaL – give me in marriage to him such that people do not say that “she went on her own”. Just as hanuman had said in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 16.5 “thulya SeelA vayO vruththAm” (sIthAp pirAtti has her nature, age and activities matching those of SrI rAma), one who is similar. Give me in marriage to him, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 73.24 “sahadharma charI thava prathIchchachainAm” (She is capable of carrying out righteous activities with you, accept her).

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the herd-girl [who is speaking these verses in the pAsuram] thinks of herself as being the daughter born in the clan of janaka and as the daughter of periyAzhwAr. After seeing krishNa in thiruvAyppAdi, she has forgotten that she was born in thiruvAyppAdi.

kodeeRAgil kOzhambamE – If you do not give me like that, it would lead to confused state of mind for you all. I cannot step back from going ahead [with him]. She is like chinthayanthi [chinthayanthi was living in thiruvAyppAdi; one day, while she was inside the house, she heard the music from the flute played by krishNa. She wanted to go out to where he was; however, her in-laws and teachers were sitting in her path. She stood there, happy hearing his flute; she stood there, sad that she could not go to him. Happiness that she felt removed all her puNya (virtues) and sadness removed all her pApas (sins); with her sins and virtues removed, she attained mOksham (SrI vaikuNtam)]. She says that their confusion does not have any purpose. With her death, everything will come to an end, she says.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the herd-people will have confusion only, if they do not give the herd-girl in marriage to krishNa. He quotes from SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 16.19 “sarvAn bhOgAn parithyajya” (abandoning all the comfort [in palace], sIthAp pirAtti, impelled by her love towards her consort, SrI rAma, went to the forest) and SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 30.18 “nirayOyasthvayA vinA” (where I am not with you is hell for me, says sIthAp pirAtti to SrI rAma) to say that the herd-girl will go with krishNa irrespective of anything else. Their [herd-folk’s] confusion will end with perishing only.

We shall next consider the 6th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
