Simple Translation
Oh, one who is the most eminent among all the souls! With your anklets, worn on the divine feet, making a noise, you are singing, and dancing, swaying from side to side, appropriate to that singing, while you are running in a flurry, typical of your childhood. When you come towards me like that, I was amazed thinking “Isn’t he padhmanAbhan!” Instead of running away from me, you should consume milk.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
Oda Oda … – Instead of walking softly, with a pride typical of childhood, as you run in an excited manner, with the anklets on the divine feet making a sound.
pAdip pAdi – adhanukkERRa kUththai asaindhu asaindhu ittu – Adi – through your gait, swaying from left to right, dancing in line with the song. He is mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 10-1-6 as “kUththan kOvalan” (one who walks beautifully like an expert dancer and who protects those who need protection), one who walks as if he is an expert dancer. Thus, when he comes in a flurry, the sounds from the anklets would appear like a song and his gait would appear like a dance. Alternatively, considering the noise made by the anklets as the base notes for music, krishNa would sing himself and dance to that song, by swaying from side to side.
varuginRAyaip paRpanAban enRu irundhEn – while you were coming towards me in this manner, looking at the divine navel on your form, as mentioned in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 11-2 “koppUzhil ezhu kamalap pUvahagar” (the beautiful entity who has the lotus flower springing out of his beautiful divine navel), would your divine navel not appear like an ornament such that there was no necessity for any other decoration for your divine form! Does he require any other singing and dancing? yaSOdhAp pirAtti was in amazement, thinking “How do the sound of the anklet and the beauty of the gait appear like singing and dancing!” She was thinking “Isn’t the one, who creates from destruction, coming towards me, to make me exist!” [implying that by consuming her milk, he would make her exist].
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that AzhwAr says “paRpanAban enRu irundhEn” recalling his earlier pAsuram 1.6.5 “paRpanAbA chappANi”. AzhwAr had thought of krishNa’s eminence of being the cause for the creation of universe. AzhwAr said “Instead of manifesting the simplicity of your childhood in line with your incarnation as a human being, is it required to manifest this eminence? Come to me” upon hearing which, he started running away from AzhwAr.
Odi Odi … – Instead of comprehending the meaning of her utterances, krishNa thought “Instead of speaking about my simplicity, she is talking about my eminence which is reflective of my independence” and started running away from her. She tells him not to run away from her like this whereby she would not be able to reach him. Since he is purushOththaman [most eminent among all the souls], she tells him that in line with his quality of ASritha pArathanthryam [dependence on followers], he should come under her control and consume her bosom milk.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr tells krishNa “Do not run away. Aren’t you uththaman [most eminent among all]? Come and consume my bosom milk”. The quality of being purushOththaman is to manifest his ASritha pArathanthryam. Through this, it appears that just as it has been said in thaiththirIya upanishath Anandhavalli apprApya manasA saha [emperumAn is beyond one’s words and mind], krishNa would run away from AzhwAr, who is the best among those who follow vEdhams. The pAsuram should be read as Osaik kiNkiNigaL Oda Oda Adi Adi olikkum pANiyAlE pAdip pAdi adhanukkERRa kUththai asaindhau asaindhu ittu Adi Adi varuginRAyai, paRpanAban enRu irundhEn, Odi Odip pOy vidAdhE uththamA in order to get the sequential meaning.
