In the form of narasimha, my lord tore the chest of huge hiraNya with his beautiful nails; How has such emperumAn showered his mercy? I performed anjali towards thiruppullANi where the ocean’s waves which are striking each other have come and are roaming; tears are overflowing in my eyes which look like flowers which are having beetles and my beautiful garment is not staying on my waist.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
pariya iraNiyadhAgam – This is not the body which grew due to greatness in heart by thinking “There is a lord and we should attain him”. Since hiraNya does not think “There is someone greater than me”, he is not having the desire to attain him as well. Now, the understanding of the presence of an AthmA which is different from the body, is also not there. Since, he is a dhEhAthmAbhimAni (one who considers the body to be self), he just nurtured his body only. Hence, since he is not accepting “There is a lord” and “There is something beyond the visible body”, he simply boasted his body with the strength of his boons. All of these gathered together and became food for bhagavAn’s divine nails.
aNi ugirAl – He put his nails which are to be seen and enjoyed as an instrument to kill hiraNya. The nails which are so tender to even embrace his divine consorts, was engaged in hiraNya’s rough body.
ari uruvAyk kINdAn – Since emperumAn did not know which form will be said by hiraNya, he came in the combined form of human and lion and appeared there. As hiraNya saw the narasimha form form, he became weak; hence emperumAn effortlessly tore him.
aruL thandhavA namakku – When a child had his father turned to be his enemy, bhagavAn helped him; see how such bhagavAn is helping the sorrow of a helpless woman which came about due to not attaining him! [Implies, he has not helped her]
poru thiraigaL pOndhlavu pullANi kai thozhudhEn – As said in periya thirumozhi 9.3.2 “porudhu munnIrk karaikkE maNiyundhu pullANi … thozhudhum ezhu” (thiruppullANi where the ocean is pushing the gemstones near the shore. Worship such thiruppullANi and be uplfted).
ari malar kaNNIr thadhumba andhugilum nillAdhE – As the waves from the ocean come and roam around, I thought of enjoying the ocean and its waves, together with him; he said “Should she go searching for this?” and made tears overflow in my body itself.
