Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

konguN vaNdE kariyAga vandhAn – He came in such a manner that only him and I are there. He came having the beetles which are drinking the honey from his garland, to be the witness. Those who are happily enjoying their life eating and wearing different clothes, will not be able to see the face of those who are fasting and speak to them. Those beetles are enjoying their life happily. As said in “nakkuNdAr nAvizhAr” (Those who got favours from a person will not highlight such person’s defects), will these beetles speak for us, after living off him?

kodiyERku – I have done great sins to request for a union which is witnessed by someone.

When asked “Do you need to ask for others’ witness for the union which you enjoyed? Why don’t you speak about it yourself?” parakAla nAyaki says

mun nangaL Isan namakkE paNiththa mozhi seydhilan – During the union, he captured me by owning me and destroying [subduing] me, did not act according to his words. When those who are capable step aside, there is no one to give a solution.

namakkE paNiththa – SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 38-41 “AnruSamsyam parO dharmas thvaththa Eva mayA Srutha:” (It was heard by me from you that compassion is the most eminent dharmam (righteousness)) – during the union, some words are spoken. That is – he said “If a person unites with another person and separates, I cannot bear their sorrow in separation; this is my nature”. He did that so that she can reminisce those words while suffering in separation thinking “Isn’t this what he said?” and sustain herself. She is saying “Instead of hearing this through someone else, I heard from him directly with my own ears”.

The friend says, “Though he violated his own commitment, it is inapt for your age to go to his abode”.

mangai nallAy thozhudhum ezhu – Yes. This is what you accomplish by seeing your age. Let us start quickly. She is saying – When my age is being lost, what is the benefit of you saying, “let us see our age”? perumAL (SrI rAma) said SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 5-5 “na mE dhu:hkam priyA dhUrE na mE dhu:kkam hruthEthi vA l EthadhEvAnuSOchAmi vayO’syA hyathivarthathE” (I am not distressed that the who is sweet to me is in a far-away place; I am neither distressed that she had been abducted. I am distressed only because she is growing older). I am not upset that “mythili is separated from me and staying far away”; also, I am not upset that “due to the strong rAkshasa, this separation has happened; how will we remedy this now?”; that is – if he remains in a distant place, we can build a bridge across the ocean and travel to her place and remedy that; now, the evil person who is the cause for the separation can be killed and that will be the remedy; I am upset for some other reason; I am only upset for that reason. What is that reason? vayOsyA hyathivarthathE – Can I retrieve this time that was lost with my arrow? Whatever has crossed the bridge over to its eastern side, cannot be retrieved.

pOy avan mannum Ur – This is saying “pOyth thozhudhum ezhu” (go, worship and be uplifted); or “avan pOy mannum Ur” – this is the abode where has gone and is staying. It seems that there is no on sufferers in that abode; where he is eternally present, there will be no one suffering.

pongu munnIr karaikkE maNi undhu pullANiyE – This the abode where the one who is suffering need not go and get their desired object, but will be pushed to such person’s location. My bad; the nature of that dhivyadhESam is not seen in him, unfortunately!
