Simple Translation

thirumAlirum sOlai is the divine mountain where emperumAn lives. He will make kings, who do not approach the mountain and who are not favourable, to go through the narrow path in the hot forest. It is the beautiful mountain where beetles, with six legs, will get up early in the morning and sing the thousand names of emperumAn.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

kuRugAdha mannarai – kings, who do not approach thirumAlirum sOlai. While they could remain as favourable entities and live with others, it is the unfavourable ones, who cannot live with others [favourable or unfavourable here refers to their nature with emperumAn and his followers].

kUdu kalakki – destroying their habitation. In other words, destroying the cities and towns which they have built in a distinguished manner, to serve as the sources of enjoyment, implements for enjoyment and places of enjoyment.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that the term iruppidam [habitation] would refer to the good places which are appropriate for kings to live.

vengAnidai – in the middle of the hot forest. The heat in the forest was such that even for entities who go through the forest every day, such as chandhran [moon], the forest appeared to be unsuitable for going through. It is similar to the situation mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 4.1.2vemmin oLi veyil kAnagam” ([the defeated kings] will go to the hot forest where the sun’s rays will be like lightning).

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the defeated kings will choose to go through the narrow path for fear of being killed should they take the broader, open path, by those who had driven them here, since they were as mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 4.1.2uymmin thiRai koNarndhu enRu ulagu ANdavar …” (when they were kings, ruling over vast lands, they will tell their inferior states, which were under their rule, to bring tributes to them and survive).

siRu kAneRiyE pOkkuvikkum – while the broad path in the forest will be there, out of fear that those who defeated them could be following them [to kill them], the defeated kings will choose the narrow path [hidden from view] in the forest and proceed. emperumAn will make them do this.

selvan – the reason for doing this is that he is SrIya:pathi [the divine consort of SrI mahAlakshmi]. It is only because of her that emperumAn protects the favourable ones and destroys the unfavourable ones [while pirAtti is full of compassion, why should emperumAn destroy anyone, for her sake? Since they trouble the favourable ones, pirAtti would welcome this punishment. In janathAnam, inside dhaNdakAraNya forest, when perumAL killed fourteen thousand demons, pirAtti felt that she was alive and tightly embraced perumAL; this is because, the demons were harming sages there, the favourable entities].

ponmalai – it is the distinguished mountain, where SrIya:pathi, who is like this, resides.

aRu kAl siRu vaNdugaL – beautiful beetles, which have six legs. Though this, their rUpaguNam [quality of their physical form] has been described.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that even kings care for dispensable entities while even animals [here, this term refers to beetles] are worthy of acceptance.

Ayira nAmam sollich chiRu kAlaip pAdum – they will sing the thousand divine names of emperumAn, as mentioned in mahAbhAratham sabhA parvam 38.11 “dhEvO nAma sahasravAn” (lord, with thousand names), early in the morning, which is the time for sathva guNam [setting in of noble qualities], as an outlet for their happiness.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the beetles will wake up at the time of dawn and sing the thousand divine names of emperumAn, as mentioned in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 9.8kAlai ezhundhirundhu kariya kuruvikkaNangaL – sOlai malaip perumAn” (flocks of dark sparrows will wake up at the time of dawn and speak the words of the lord of thirumAlirum sOlai malai)

then thirumAlirum sOlaiyE – the beautiful thirumAlirum sOlai, which is like this.

We shall next consider the 9th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
