Simple Translation

krishNa, who is the controller of celestial entities, would enter places such as upper storeys or large mansions, all alone, engage with the herd-girls present there as a confidante, offer them his divine lips which are reddish like the kovvaip pazham, and engage in mischiefs with them. Instead of roaming around like this, I had allowed him to go behind calves, to forests, where, hunters, holding bows in their hands, roam around. How sad! What sin have I committed?

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

avvavvidam pukku – [krishNa] entered places such as upper storey, middle storey, cellar etc, without anyone knowing about that.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that krishNa would enter places such as courtyard, streets where little girls are building sand houses, middle storeys, upper storeys, ponds, streams where people take a bath in the month of mArgazhi (dhanur mAsam), gardens, places where they churn curd to get butter, cellars etc, and be a confidential servitor to those girls in each of those places.

avvAyar peNdiRku aNukkanAy – being a servitor of herd-girls, who were present in those places. In other words, behaving in the way that they had thought of him to behave with them.

kovvaik kanivAyk koduththu – offering his divine lips, which were reddish like the kovvaip pazham, to them as their life-sustaining entity

kUzhaimai seyyAmE – instead of roaming around, carrying out mischiefs with those girls. kUzhmai – telling the girls “I do not know of anyone other than you”. “I cannot sustain myself without you” etc, making it appear that he exists only for that particular girl.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti is lamenting that instead of seeing krishNa roaming around and carrying out mischiefs with those girls… viz. instead of entering and roaming  around in those places, just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3.7.5 “nAraNan pOmidam ellAm” (in places where krishNa roams around) and in thiruvAimozhi 6.5.5ivaL nuzhaiyum sindhaiyaL” (she has a heart which is immersed in krishNa’s beauty) [In these two pAsurams, jIvAthmAs will follow wherever emperumAn goes whereas in the pAsuram under discussion, emperumAn goes, following girls, wherever they go]. The term kUzhaimai refers to speaking words to various girls, to satisfy each of them, as mentioned in perumAL thirumozhi 6.3karumalark kUndhal” (glancing at a girl who has flowers in her dark locks)

ervvum silai udai vEdar kAn idaievvum silai – just as it has been mentioned in periya thirumozhi 1.7.4evvum vevvEl” (having spear which causes sorrow), this refers to a bow which gives sorrow to those who see it, due to its frightening appearance. Alternatively, the word Evum [arrow] has got shortened as evvum, referring to a bow together with arrows. In the former case, the word evvum refers to causing sorrow on account of the frightening appearance of the bow; in the latter case, it refers to bow with arrow. To synchronise with the earlier lines, the word evum has got reinforced as evvum, with an additional ‘v’ syllable. In the forest, where hunters, carrying such bow, inhabit.

kanRin pin dheyvath thalaivanaip pOkkinEn – I allowed the lord of celestial entities to go behind calves, which go as they like, without any control.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti says that she sent krishNa, who is the head of nithyasUris, as the head of herd-boys.

ellE pAvamE – In a dejected manner, she says “What cruel sin have I committed?”

We shall next consider the 6th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
