Simple Translation
Oh, one who is standing in thiruveLLaRai and showering your mercy, where celestial entities keep praying to you on all three times of morning, noon and night and where those who keep meditating constantly on your eminence, reside! Oh, one who is my lord! Oh, one who incarnated in order to rule over us! You destroy the houses, built with sand, and rice, cooked with sand, by those who have bosoms which are soft and appear like a golden bowl. When I use words in anger, when you do such activities, you run away, without eating sweet rice kept for you. Now, I will not catch you or beat you. You should come and allow me to carry out kAppu for you.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
seppu … – those who have bosoms which have a form looking like copper, but being soft instead of being hard like that
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa “You have still not eaten the sweet rice which I have made for you, after I had scolded you not to play with girls, who have their bosoms which appear like copper and who have soft nature, by destroying their food and houses made of sand, despite my calling out to you repeatedly”. Is this the way you are ruling over me? This is similar to periyAzhwAr 1.6.11 “AtkoLLaththOnRiya Ayar tham kOvinai” (one who incarnated in the clan of herd-people as their head, in order to rule over them).
siRu sORum illum sidhaiththittu – destroying the rice and houses, made by them with sand, as an outlet for their playing
appOdhu nAn urappap pOy – when I became angry then, telling you “Do not play with girls, holding their hands and fighting with them”, you were afraid to stand in my presence, thinking that I am going to catch you and beat you.
adisilum uNdilai – You have not consumed the sweet rice, which I had affectionately prepared for you.
ennai ALvAnE – Oh, who was born to rule over me! Is this the manner in which you wish to rule over me? For her, his ruling over her would happen when he listens to her words, consumes whatever she gives and behaves like a calf controlled through a stick.
muppOdhum … – celestial entities worship you three times in a day, in the morning, noon and evening, when they have brahma bhAvanai in predominance [brahma bhAvanai refers to engaging with thoughts about emperumAn, as opposed to karma bhAvanai when one engages with carrying out rituals as mentioned in vEdhams], just like it has been mentioned in iraNdAm thiruvandhAdhi 73 “Adhi nadu andhi vAy” (reciting the divine names of emperumAn, during dawn, noon and dusk times); sages, who keep meditating upon your well-being constantly, reside in thiruveLLaRai. Oh, one who is mercifully standing in such thiruveLLaRai!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as it has been mentioned in periya thiruvandhAdhi 64 “uranAl oru mUnRu pOdhum” (thinking with their minds, on three occasions in a day), emperumAn listens mercifully when celestial entities praise him, when brahma bhAvanai comes to the fore for them, and sages, who keep meditating constantly, desire the divine abode thiruveLLaRai. Oh, one who is standing there and showering your mercy!
ippOdhu nAn onRum seyyEn – Though I had spoken a few words then, having good intention for you, I will not do anything to you now.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that AzhwAr tells krishNa “Apart from feeding you sweet rice, I will not control you”. But krishNa runs away, saying “Aren’t these your [false] words?” Even as he ran away, AzhwAr kept chasing him. thiruvAimozhip piLLai wonders at this turn of events [emperumAn is the most eminent entity and he is running away, and, periyAzhwAr, who is his servitor, is running after him, hoping to catch him]. He says that the pAsuram should be transposed as following, to get sequential meaning: empirAn ennai ALvAy, seppOdhu menmulaiyArgaL siRu sORum illum sidhaiththittu nAn urappappOy, muppOdhum vAnavargaL Eththum munivargaL veLLaRai ninRAy ippOdhu adisilum uNdilai; ippOdhu nAn onRum seyyEn; kAppida vArAy
empirAn kAppida vArAy – Oh, one who is my lord! You should come such that I could carry out kAppu for you.
We shall next consider the 4th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
