Simple translation

In the past, during krishNAvathAram, to cause fear for the poisonous snake named kALiyan, bhagavAn who is having great divine feet, entered into the pond having vast lotus flowers and water, in a war, in front of the cowherd boys; being mahAvarAham, he dug out the world; in vAmAnavAthAram, he measured the worlds with two steps; If we were to utter the divine name of sarvESvaran, it is in the form of “namO nArAyaNa“.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

vidam thAn udaiya … – What was spoken by AzhwAr in the previous pAsuram, is being repeated by him again here (because he remembered that again). One day in a war, in front of the cowherd boys, who are said as in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3.1.1 “thannErAyiram piLLaigaL” (thousand boys matching krishNa), krishNa entered the pond which had well-blossomed lotus flowers and abundant water which can be used in many ways. He drove out kALiyan from that pond – having such greatness.

thALALan … – one who has the divine feet.

He assumed the form which will not hesitate to enter water and mud, and rose after rescuing earth which was consumed by deluge. The name of the one who measured the worlds with his two steps.
