yaSOdhAp pirAtti became angry on krishNa saying that he was hiding and swallowing butter, she bound him with a beautiful rope to the mortar. Being bound, he sobbed and cried. Such krishNa is eternally residing thirunaRiyUr where the beetles joyfully drink the honey on the tender flowers and the beautiful southerly breeze throws the flowers on those beetles and jasmine flower having glorious mouth is blossoming. Such nambi is our refuge.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
oLiyA veNNey … – Hiding from others, krishNa would mercifully consume the butter which was saved by yaSOdhA/gOpikAs. Alternative explanation. He mercifully consumed the butter which is difficult to hide from him. Saying this, yaSOdhA would become angry and bind him with the mortar, where the rope presses on his divine form. Alternative explanation, as the rope came in contact with his divine form, it became shining.
AppuNdu … – As he cannot sustain without butter, which has been touched by his dear devotees, he remained bound in that manner. He is capable of breaking free from nAgAsthram (a weapon which ties down people); alternative explanation – if dhuryOdhana et al bind him – he will free himself; but if his devotees bind him, he will not free himself. She said, as in SrIvishNu purANam 5.6.15 “yadhiSaknOshi” (free yourself up, if you can). vangipuraththu nambi prayed to emperumAnAr for a long time saying “Please teach how to do thiruvArAdhanam”; due to some hurdles emperumAnAr could not teach him that; but when he was mercifully present in thirumalA, he mercifully taught the same to kUraththAzhwAn and SrI hanumath dhAsar; towards the end, vangipuraththu nambi arrived there and emperumAnAr became scared and mercifully spoke these words “I had a doubt for a long time; now it is cleared – when the controller became scared by those who are controlled by him, being bound, got beaten and stood sobbing, we thought ‘if this is possible/truth?’ – but now for the two mistakes (not teaching when vangipuraththu nambi who had asked at first, not inviting him while teaching to kUraththAzhwAn and SrI hanumath dhAsar now), I have become scared seeing you. Now I understand that the controllers will fear for the controlled ones”. Here also emperumAnAr is the controller and all others are controlled by him.
vimmi azhudhAn – There is no limit to what is going on in his mind; he let all of those thoughts out in the form of sobbing; she will say “Don’t cry; don’t cry” – so he will control his emotions and sob.
men malar … – Everywhere flowers are blossomed; beetles which reached there to drink the honey, becoming joyful having attained that, would drink the honey as if drinking intoxicant. The beautiful southerly breeze which saw that, threw accusations (in the form of flowers). The jasmine flower, seeing these, gently smiled, controlling the laughter, thinking about the events which happened there as in “Beetles are drinking honey; the breeze is throwing flowers”
