In this thirumozhi (divine words), ANdAL expresses her love for the emperumAn at thiruvEngadam and sends clouds as her messenger [to him]. If one were to ask “In the previous thirumozhi, she had been speaking to SrI pAnchajanyam; why is she now sending clouds as her messenger?” the answer is: once she spoke to SrI pAnchajanyam, due to the matured nature of her thoughts, would not her devotion go until emperumAn? Further, since SrI pAnchajanyAzhwAn has become his servitor after attaining him, he has become emperumAn’s attribute. Without the substrate, the attribute cannot exist. In the previous thirumozhi, she had asked certain questions of SrI pAnchajanyAzhwAn. He did not respond. Since it was the rainy season, clouds started forming and were roaring. emperumAn too, when he left her, had told her that he would return during monsoon time. However, he had not come, though rainy season had arrived. Only the clouds, which too had his dark complexion, had come. She was bewildered, whether he too had come. Though pAnchajanyam had not responded to her questions, since poygai AzhwAr had mercifully drawn a harmony between pAnchajanyam and clouds, as mentioned in mudhal thiruvandhAdhi 27 “kArkkOdu paRRiyAn kai” (emperumAn’s hand is holding the conch pAnchajanyam which looks like a cloud), after hearing the thunderous sound from the clouds, she became satisfied, a bit. Looking at the clouds, she asked a few questions about emperumAn. They too did not respond. Feeling very distressed, due to that, she tells them “Since you are also residing on the same hills of thiruvEngadam where emperumAn is residing, there is a connection between the two of you. Hence, you should convey my status to him, as my messenger”, sending them to him as her messenger. Just as sIthAp pirAtti had sent hanuman, who is an expert in aindhra vyAkaraNam (treatise on samskrutha grammar, written by indhra), as her messenger in rAmAvathAram [incarnation of SrI rAma], she sends the clouds as her messenger in archAvathAram [incarnation in idol form], not realising, due to her bewilderment, that these clouds, being achEthana entities (without knowledge) cannot carry her words to emperumAn in thiruvEngadam. She does not have the clarity too that “in archAvathAram, other than manifesting himself to his devotees, [emperumAn] does not involve in activities such as speaking, embracing etc”. If one were to ask here whether it is not a sign of lowliness on the part of ANdAL to manifest her quality of lust, just like the worldly people, the response is that the lust which ANdAL exhibits here is nothing but devotion with regard to matters related to emperumAn. It is not the prAkrutha kAmam (lust exhibited by people living in samsAram). Since those who exhibit devotion towards emperumAn could sustain themselves only if they are together with him and could not sustain in separation from him, just like the people in samsAram could sustain only if they are together with their beloveds, the quality of devotion is expressed here as a word of srungAram (love). It is in the nature of consorts such as ANdAL to sustain themselves only if they are together with emperumAn. It is because of this that AzhwArs too embraced the pathos of a consort and expressed their devotion towards emperumAn. For them, having been born as men, it gained eminence. For ANdAL, born as a girl, it comes as a natural quality.
