The eminence of ANdAL is greater than that of sIthAp pirAtti. sIthAp pirAtti had to ask a monkey, a species she had not known, as in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 35-4 “kIdhruSam thasya samsthAnam rUpa rAmasya kIdhruSam l katham Uru katham bAhu lakshmaNasya cha Samsa mE ll” (How is that SrI rAm’s physique? How is his divine form? How are his thighs? How would be the arms? In the same way, describe the similar limbs of lakshmaNa, to me). However, in this thirumozhi (divine words), did not ANdAL get the distinction of asking SrI pAnchajanya AzhwAn [divine conch, held by emperumAn in his divine left hand], who is her purushakAram (playing recommendatory role) for attaining emperumAn and the dhESikar (teacher) for guiding her in enjoying emperumAn ”karuppUram nARumO kamalappU nARumO” (Will emperumAn’s saliva have the fragrance of medicated camphor or the fragrance of lotus flower?) In the previous thirumozhi (6th decad), ANdAL had dreamt of marrying emperumAn. In this thirumozhi (7th decad) it is clear that she had also united with him. Otherwise, it would not be appropriate for her to ask here “marupposiththa mAdhavan than vAychchuvaiyum nARRamum viruppuRRuk kEtkinREn”. Since the experience which she had obtained in the previous decad was in her dream, it would have been only evanescent like the firefly flying and would not have got established in her mind firmly. However, since it was a dream regarding emperumAn, it would not have remained without having an impact on her mind. In the union, which followed subsequent to the dream, since he would have wanted to increase her urge [to attain him ultimately], he would have cut it [union] short at the beginning itself. Thus, there is no deficiency in her asking SrI pAnchajanya AzhwAn regarding the experience that she should have received. While there are many other nithyasUris (permanent dwellers of SrI vaikuNtam) such as garuda, vishvaksEnar et al, why did she ask SrI pAnchajanya AzhwAn? Following are the reasons:
- When the emperor is in privacy with his beloved, in private quarters, there is permission for aged hunchback, dwarfs et al. Similar to them, SrI pAnchajanya AzhwAn is also a confidential attendant to him.
- He is also an expert in imbibing the taste of emperumAn’s divine mouth, just as she, his consort, is.
- Unlike her, who unites with emperumAn occasionally, he is always together with emperumAn.
- Even though the divine disc is also a constant confidential attendant of emperumAn, on occasions he has to leave emperumAn’s divine hand, when there is a need, just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 10-6-8 “karudhumidam porudhu kainninRa chakkaraththan” (emperumAn has the divine disc which goes where his heart desires and returns, to stay on his divine hand). However, this pAnchajanyan has the affection to stay on emperumAn’s divine hand constantly; if there is a need, he will move out of his hand, embrace his divine mouth and start imbibing his nectar. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 5-3-11 “upasamhara sarvAthman! rUpam Ethachchathurbhujam l jAnAthu mA’vathAram thE kamSOýam dhithijanmaja ll” (Oh one who is all pervading! Please hide your divine form with four divine hands. Let not kamsan, the monster, know about your divine incarnation), the reason for its disappearance from the divine hand of emperumAn’s is also to ensure that inimical entities such as kamsan et al do not see him [emperumAn]. He will however, manifest himself to girls who are affectionate towards emperumAn.
- He will sit on the divine lips of emperumAn, make a triumphant roar, annihilating the enemies with that roar itself.
- When these girls enjoy the divine form of emperumAn, since he adds a beautiful contrast to the dark complexion of emperumAn’s divine form through his white complexion, it is only appropriate to meditate on him when thinking of emperumAn. Isn’t he one with Sudhdha svabhAvam (noble character) with his white complexion? Doesn’t ANdAL too constantly think of him, just as she had mercifully said in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 11-1 “thAm ugakkum tham kaiyil sangamE pOlAvO” (Doesn’t emperumAn feel happy with the divine conch on his divine hand?), as in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 5-2 “veLLai viLisangu idangaiyil koNda vimalan” (the supreme entity, who is pious, is having on the divine left hand, SrI pAnchajanyam (divine conch) which is having total purity as its nature, and which is calling out (to those who are interested in servitude)) and in thiruppAvai 26 “pAlanna vaNNatthu un pAnchasanniyamE” (Your divine conch which has milk-like complexion)
- If one were to listen to the sound of this pAnchajanyam it will be as sweet as listening to emperumAn’s divine words.
For these reasons, she is enquiring of SrI pAnchajanya AzhwAn instead of other nithyasUris.
