Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
kudaiyA … – As a remedy for the hailstorm, he held a mountain as protection.
Endhi – Since it was done for the sake of others, it did not cause any pain for him.
mAri … – To make the effort of indhra, the leader, be wasted, he protected the cows which cannot even understand his favour.
adal vANam … – As rudhra who considers himself to be ISvara (controller), ran away from the battle-field, emperumAn severed the shoulders of bANAsura who had the urge to fight. krishNa did not sever the head and only severed the shoulders thinking “His protector has run away; we should not sever his head”. krishNa’s mercy is due to rudhran abandoning his follower. thiruchchandha viruththam 71 “muNdan nIRan makkaL veppumOdi angi Odida” (mundan nIRan – Siva; veppu – fever; mOdi – kALi; angi – agni (deity for fire); all these deities ran away from the battlefield) – Seeing rudhran who has anointed his body with ash, his children, deity of fever, kALi and agni ran away. “nANi” – He became embarrassed thinking “Did we come to kill the one who surrendered to those who ran away seeing the enemies?”, showed his mercy to bANan; just as one would show mercy towards a woman who has lost her husband.
thalaivan idam – The abode of the one who continuously has such dominance.
kudiyA … – Beetles along with their children, grandchildren, wives et al, drank the honey. If a mosquito enters into an ocean, the ocean will not lose any of its water. It is only puLLambUdhangudi which is beautiful due to having vast fertile fields where beautiful neelam flower is letting out a flood of honey.
