Oh mind! Which activity will make me forget him? emperumAn followed me into the surroundings of orchards which are surrounded by ponds pervaded by pollens and said “I will not separate from you, who are ignorant” and then separated from me; thiruppullANi is the abode of such emperumAn, which is surrounded by orchards which have flowers which blossom daily and emanate the fragrance; worship that abode and be uplifted.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
Edhu seydhAl maRakkEn manamE – Not just being able to think about him, I am unable to forget him. People in general, when they unite with their beloved person, will not forget such person, and when they get separated, will not think about such person. Unlike that, here, in separation, I am unable to forget him. Now, our situation is distinguished. She is saying “After uniting with him again, we may be able to forget him”. In this manner, her nature is very distinguished from others.
manamE – Oh mind! Whether it is the joy in attaining the goal or sorrow in losing the same, I have to experience it through you only.
thozhudhum ezhu – Even to forget him, it looks like we have to worship him. Whatever may be the desire, fulfilment will happen only through worshipping him.
thAdhu malgu thadam sUzh pozhil thAzhvar – We united on the bed of the pollens which are spilled out by the flowers, and then separated. The abodes which are in the vicinity of orchards which are surrounded by ponds where there is abundance of pollens spilled by the flowers.
thudarndhu – As said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 77.26 “rAmasthu sIthayA sArdham vijahAra bahUn ruthUn” (SrI rAma along with sIthAp pirAtti enjoyed happily according to each season), he completely followed parakAla nAyaki in every step in romantic pleasures. He did not let her gain any greatness in any manner. He united with her to an extreme limit so that he can abandon her in separation.
pin pEdhai ninnaip piriyEn ini enRu aganRAn – He united with her so much that she cannot survive in his separation and he took himself away and separated from her.
ninnai – One can only separate from a person who can handle union. Could he separate from you even after seeing your tender nature?
piriyEn ini enRu aganRAn – He knows that if he separates swiftly she will feel like having been hit by a thunderbolt and will be destroyed. Hence, to make her handle the separation, he spoke about it in a negative way [i.e., I will not separate]. That is – to make her sustain herself remembering “Aren’t these the words spoken by him during our union?”; if that is not the case, those words have no relevance for the union. Don’t think that “She lived happily eating and wearing different clothes, before our natural union”. After knowing about you she should have said “I cannot sustain in separation from you”. But she is only remaining in sorrow in this manner; she is ignorant. Even if he sincerely said “I will not separate”, she would think “Probably, that is also a type of union”. She does not even know the difference between union and separation.
pEdhai – Youthfulness [childishness] based on her age. But with respect to enjoyment, she will be matured. Now, distinguished persons will make the other person remain and enjoy [she is not like that, she lost him].
piriyEn ini enRu aganRAn – He acted contrary to his words. After uniting in this manner, this [separation] is not an act of a sentient person. My bad! If he sees my sorrow, it is apt for him to remain with me. He would relax his arms while embracing me, and will speak. At that time, he would have observed the pale complexion attained by my body. Could he have left even after seeing that? Though she does not know what is separation, the separation will have its impact. She cannot do anything to stop that sorrow.
enRu aganRAn – My bad! Is one of these two not sufficient [Saying “I won’t separate” and separating]? This one separation is like two thousand separations for her. Right when he said “I won’t separate”, he has separated [as per her view]. The actual separation is extraneous.
pOdhu nALum kamazhum pozhil sUzhndha pullANiyE – The abode where the fragrance is very satisfying. The abode is always having spring season.
