Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

vAnOr … – On the day when the overflowing ocean reached up to the boundaries of dhEvathAs. Incarnating as a strong mathsya which can encapsulate that ocean in just one of its scales.

viyandhu uyyak koNda – bhagavAn becomes amazed thinking “The ocean I had placed as protection have now become a threat? What is this?” Alternative explanation. AzhwAr is talking about bhagavAn thinking “I who am the cause of entire creation and am distinguished, has placed myself amidst brahmA et al as vishNu; this will not match my stature; not even that, now incarnating in a different species [as fish], is much greater”.

thaN thAmaraik kaNNan – It is said “mathsya: kamalalOchana:” (mathsya bhagavAn, who is having lotus eyes).

AnA uruvil AnAyan – One who is having a singular form always [in paramapadham as paramapadhanAthan] has now incarnated amongst one among the cow-herd clan. AnAdh uru – decayless form. In thirukkaNNapuram which is having beautiful, vast fertile-fields and surroundings which are filled with forests. It appears that one side is having forests [already we know that one side of thirukkaNNapuram was having ocean].

adiyEn kaNdu koNdEnE – I, who am a servitor, got to see him.
