Simple Translation
You [referring to krishNa] had taken a girl, who had decorated her locks with a bunch of flowers, to a place in the garden. You united with her, in her bosoms, which were decorated with a pearl necklace. You returned home yesterday night, after three yAmams. Those who are not favourable to you, will say whatever they want, regarding you. I, you mother, do not have the strength to get angry with you. Oh, my lord! I have come to know that you are the difficult-to-attain lord. Hence, I am scared to give you [my bosom] milk.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
thoththAr … – a girl, whose locks have been decorated with a bunch of flowers and who is distinct from all the other girls in thiruvAyppAdi such that she could be identified as “This girl”
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam that the term thoththu refers to a bunch of flowers.
sOlaith thadam koNdu pukku – taking her to a garden which was expansive
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the garden had a pond in it [thadam – pond]. koNdu pukku – enchanting [her] and entering with her. Since it says pukku [entering] it appears that he did not have a thought of leaving it. The word pukku is in present tense. It says that it is “A good place”.
muththAr kongai puNarndhu – embracing her bosoms which were decorated with a necklace of pearls.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the pearl necklace, by reflecting moonlight, drove away the darkness from the garden such that it enabled him to see her face clearly. puNarndhu – Embracing her made that place to become dark. It was dark to such an extent that she did not have to hide her face, out of shyness, in her fingers.
irA nAzhigai mUvEzhu senRa pin vandhAy – you returned after three yAmams had passed in the night.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as krishNa had bewildered girls, time had bewildered him. This is the reason for saying that “He returned after the passing of three yAmams”.
oththArkku oththana pEsuvar unnai – With your activity being like this, those who speak regarding you, to those who are interested in hearing [about your mischievous activities]. Through this, it is opined that you are engaging in activities which give rise to loose-talk among those who speak ill about you.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that when krishNa says “I was overcome by sleep; hence I was delayed”, those who are not favourable to him, forgetting all the good deeds which krishNa had carried out earlier, thinking that he was just like themselves [being lowly], will talk ill of him.
urappavE nAn onRum mAtten – Even if I have to get angry with you, who are like this, I do not have even a little bit of strength for it. When children become mischievous, wouldn’t mothers scold them? I am unable to do that since “Your face will wither”
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa “Since you are without faults, I will not get angry with you. Since you have come late, I will not control them”.
aththA – Oh, my lord!
unnai aRindhu koNdEn – After seeing your activities which are beyond the realm of human species, I have to come to realise that “You are beyond control”
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa “By coming late, you have made me to not respond to their words”. With sadness, she says that she has come to know that he is a mischievous person.
unaqkku … – Hence, I will be afraid to give you [my bosom] milk.
