Simple Translation

Even when he was a little child, being unable to walk with firm steps, krishNa, walking with tentative steps in an unsteady manner, looked at her [pUthanA] steadfastly, knowing that she had come to harm him. We will perish today, on account of the one who consumed the life fully, along with the milk. from the bosom of pUthanA, who came deceptively, such that she trembled. We will perish today, on account of the one who consumed her life, without any connection.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

thaLLith thaLar nadai ittu – being unable to take steps firmly, krishNa took tentative steps, in an unsteady manner.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that AzhwAr is recalling the manner in which krishNa annihilated pUthanA.

iLam piLLaiyAy – as an innocent child; this says that he was such young that he did not even have the strength to walk steadily.

uLLaththin uLLE avaLai uRa nOkki – looking at her steadfastly, knowing in his divine mind that “She is coming to harm me” without anyone knowing.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa decided in his mind that he will “Consume the milk along with the life of pUthanA, who came in a deceptive manner, such that she perishes, trembling and getting reduced to a skeleton” without anyone knowing about it. When he closed his eyes, as if he were sleeping, she took him in her arms and kept her bosom in his divine mouth. He carried out his task as he had planned.

kaLLam … – pUthanA hid her [fiendish] form and came deceptively in the form of krishNa’s mother, yaSOdhAp pirAtti. We will perish today, on account of the one who consumed along with her milk, her life too, fully, without leaving behind anything such that pUthanA quivered.

thuvakkaRa … – Even while he was consuming her poisoned milk, there was no effect of that poison on him. The herd women say “We will perish today, on account of such krishNa”. Through this, it is clear that according to the herd-women, krishNa, who protected himself from pUthanA such that his followers could exist, made himself rare for them, who are his followers. Hence, they say “We will perish today, because of him”.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that while pUthanA came in a deceptive manner, with poison applied to her bosom, when krishNa took that milk, will not the defect in the poison take effect? No, there was no effect on krishNa, since he is the purest entity and did not have any shortcoming in his quality of being a child too. Since the pAsuram has also said that he had looked at steadfastly, knowing her intention of harming him, it could be interpreted that he was a grown up. No, there was no defect in his childishness in the incarnation that he had taken, while at the same time, being the supreme entity, he also knew as to what pUthanA’s intention was.

We shall next consider the 7th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
