Oh you who went as a messenger previously, desiring to give the kingdom for dharma puthra, the eldest! Oh you who  made the mahout who was sitting firmly on the fleshy kuvalayApIdam to fall down and die and broke its tusk! Oh you who are firmly residing in the dhivyadhESam named thirukkAvaLambAdi in thirunAngUr where the tall gardens are filled with flowers and water is spreading and flowing in those gardens! Oh protector! You should be the protector.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

mUththavaRku … – Previously emperumAn went as a messenger thinking “While the apt one is present, the inapt one cannot have the crown; the eldest one should have the kingdom”. Though dhritharAshtra was the eldest, since he had disability in his body, he did not have the qualification to rule the kingdom and hence pANdu ruled the kingdom. After pANdu’s time, dhuryOdhana et al started ruling the kingdom saying “The kingdom is ours”. emperumAn said “One cannot change the tradition; son should get to rule the kingdom of the father” and went as messenger for that.

mAththamar … – Oh you who made the mahout who remained so firmly on the elephant that he would not lose his grip even if he died, to fall down and die, and effortlessly broke the tusk of the intoxicated kuvalayApIdam!

pUththamar … – In thirunAngUr which is having tall gardens which had abundance of flowers and water which is spreading out and flowing, to grow such gardens.

kAththanE – Oh you who have vowed to protect all of these worlds as said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 18.34 “Ethath vratham mama” (I won’t fail anyone who surrenders unto me. This is my vow)!

kAvaLam … – Instead of remaining away after vowing to protect, you are present in thirukkAvaLambAdi. [Hence] Only you should be my protector.
