Simple Translation
Oh, one who is holding on your divine hand, the white SrI pAnchajanyam, which, with firmness, blows, without slipping from its task of annihilation of unfavourable entities! Your birth-star of SravaNam occurs on the seventh day from today. Before that, I have invited people who speak sweetly with musical tones, prepared sprouts and carried out mangaLASAsanam. I have prepared cooked vegetables and varieties of rice preparations for celebrating [your birthday] on the divine star of SravaNam. Oh, one who is like my eyes! From tomorrow, you do not go behind the calves. Decorating yourself with ornaments etc, stay in the house itself, without leaving the house.
vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)
thiNNAr veN sangu udaiyAy – Just as it has been mentioned in thiruppallANdu 2 “padaipOr pukku muzhangum appAnchasanniyamum pallANdE” (May the divine conch, SrI pAnchajanyam, which enters battlefields and blows, live for long), when it comes to annihilating the unfavourable entities, without slipping from that task, with firmness, SrI pAnchajanyam carries out the task. Oh, one who holds such SrI pAnchajanyam, which complements the complexion of your divine form, as mentioned in thiruppAvai 26 “pAlanna vaNNaththu un pAnchajanyam” (the divine conch which has the colour of milk) in your divine hand!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa has the firmness resulting from annihilation of unfavourable entities and protection of favourable entities. Also, he has SrI pAnchajanyam. Alternatively, he says that krishNa has SrI pAnchajanyam which has this firmness [of annihilating unfavourable and protecting favourable entities] and has the nature of being pure.
thirunAL thiruvONam inRu Ezhu nAL mun – thiruvONam star, under which you were born, comes on the seventh day from today.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that this verse implies that today is the star of viSAkham which is splendorous with bhakthirUpApannagyAnam (knowledge derived out of devotion to emperumAn) and its anushtAnam (implementing it) [The reference here is to the star of nammAzhwAr, who has been showered bhakthirUpApanna gyAnam by emperumAn]. He says that just as periyAzhwAr had earlier said “aththaththin paththAm nAL” (tenth day from the star of hastham), here too he is hiding krishNa’s divine star under which he was born.
mun … – Hence, in preparation for that, I had invited those who speak sweetly in a musical voice, made out sprouting seeds in pots [this is an auspicious activity carried out before any auspicious function such as birthday, wedding day etc or carrying out annual celebrations in temples] and carried out mangaLASAsanam.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that there are entities who, even when they say words such as “You” or “I” [which are common words], will say it with a musical note and their words would be full of thathvagyAnam [knowledge about the truths – mainly about emperumAn]. He says that AzhwAr invited such people, carried out mangaLASAsanam for them and kept the sprouting seeds ready, just as he had said in thiruppallANdu 3 “vAzhAtpattu uLLirEl vandhu maNNum maNamum koNmin” (If you are fully engaged with servitude to emperumAn in order to uplift yourselves, come and take part in the temple celebrations by carrying the divine soil). thiruvAimozhip piLLai further says that when the function of keeping the sprouting seeds ready for namperumAL’s uthsavam [annual celebration] is to be held, araiyars [scholars who sing AzhwArs’ nAlAyira dhivya prabandham in temples in the traditional method established by nAthamunigaL] such as thiruvarangapperumAL araiyar, piLLai thirunaRaiyUr araiyar, AppAn thiruvazhundhUr araiyar would be invited and, along with them, our preceptors would recite thiruppallANdu and make ready the sprouting seeds’ pots to signal the start of uthsavam.
kaNNAlam … – In order conduct your marriage [birthday] on that day, I have prepared vegetables and rice foods, storing them in vessels.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti, recalling the time when she had made dishes such as sennel arisi siRu paruppu etc earlier for the divine day of SravaNam star, recalls that here.
kaNNA – Oh, one who is like my eyes!
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as people say kaNNA, karuththE etc [oh, one who is like my eyes, one who is like my treasure], krishNa is the eyes and treasure for AzhwAr.
nI nALaith thottu kanRin pin pOgEl – Do not go behind calves, from tomorrow, saying that “It is my duty, in line with my clan”.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa need not go behind the calves, knowing krishNa’s eminence and the calves’ simplicity. Simplicity for calves comes out of remaining quiet when tethered; standing aside, during milking of the cow; during the time of grazing, obeying the tunes of krishNa played by him on is flute. Since krishNa has already completed grazing task for the day, yaSOdhAp pirAtti ordered him not to go [permanently] from the next day. Since he did not agree for that, she tells him not to go for the next seven days.
kOlam seydhu ingE iru – yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa, in an ordering manner, to decorate himself with ornaments and other such entities [such as sandalwood paste, flowers etc], and stay inside the house itself.
thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that yaSOdhAp pirAtti, after telling krishNa to remain after decorating himself, starts decorating him immediately.
