periya thirumozhi >> Eighth centum >> First decad
Highlights from avathArikai (Introduction)
While narrating this, nampiLLai, who had heard this pAsuram mercifully explained, said “As piLLai amudhanAr was explaining the introduction for this decad, he cleverly narrated how the kings would climb their palanquin and roam around in the private quarters and streets. Since we were young at that time, we could not comprehend those explanations. We analysed what is the connection between this decad and the activities of the kings. Now, we have understood that it is this (what is explained in this pAsuram)”.

Simple translation
My daughter, parakAla nAyaki is saying “bhagavAn is remaining seated on the victorious, unique periya thiruvadi (garudAzhwAr) and coming to a common/public place; he is matching dhEvEndhran who is the indhran for king nahusha et al who are spoken of as indhra in this world just for their engagement in battles; will we, who are born as women, not be uplifted if we get to embrace that emperumAn’s divine chest?” Did she see to the satisfaction of her eyes and worship the lord, SaurirAjan who is mercifully present in thirukkaNNapuram, where, those who have learnt vEdhams and other SAsthrams, are residing?
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
koRRap puL … – bhagavAn, who is common for all and who is the unique benefactor, climbed his vehicle and arrived at the place which is common/public for all, just as those who go and feed water in a pot to thirsty people, wherever they are. She is saying “I don’t know who is going to capture him? Who is going to attack him?” She is thinking that he should come without anyone else’s knowledge and enter into her eyes and remain there.
Next, she is saying “If he sets out to come here, he has no obstacles”.
veRRip pOr … – When it comes to battles in wars, he is as said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 3.40 “vIryE sAkshAth SaSipathE:” (In valour, he is like indhra). For indhran [valorous kings], there is another indhran – that is, mahEndhran. One who became crowned through killing of vruthrAsura et al. She is saying that bhagavAn matches such indhran.
peRRakkAl … – If we get to embrace his divine chest. As said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 40-5 “srushtathvam vanavAsAya – pramAdham mAkArshI:” (you were sired by me only to follow SrI rAma to the forest – don’t look at his beauty and miss out on serving him), if we get to embrace him, we will live, otherwise we will perish as said in thaiththirIya upanishath “asannEva” (considered as non-sentient). Such us, will be uplifted by such an embrace. In that dhivyadhESam, there is no one who steals manuscripts and studies them; there is no one who learns by studying books on his own; they are all well-learnt in SAsthrams and vEdhams by hearing from an AchArya and repeating that. While she is speaking about one who is fully spoken of in vEdham coming there and what is said in “yam indhramAhu:” (He is said to be indhran), should she not have seen him at all?
In the next article we will enjoy the next pAsuram.
