puNdarIkAkshar (uyyakkondAr) – thiruveLLarai
Glories of uyyakkoNdAr
uyyakkoNdAr’s original name was puNdarIkAkshar. He was nAthamunigaL’s Sishya and learnt nAlAyira dhivya prabandham from him. He was born in thiruveLLarai. He was born in the month of chiththirai on kArththigai star. We have learnt that nAthamunigaL was an expert in yOga SAsthram. uyyakkoNdAr and kurugaik kAvalappan were important Sishyas of nAthamunigaL. When nAthamunigaL wanted to teach yOga SAsthram to his Sishyas, uyyakkoNdAr replied, “piNam kidakka maNam puNarvAr undO?” This means – How is it suitable to talk about auspicious things like marriage in a house where there is death?” uyyakkondAr asked, “When the people in this samsAram are suffering, how can I alone learn yOga SAsthram and enjoy emperumAn through that?”. He vowed, “I will learn with excellence all the nAlAyira dhivya prabandha pAsurams and teach those to the people in this world so that they can be liberated from their suffering”. Hence, he is aptly called ‘uyyakkoNdAr’ which means ‘one who came to provide salvation to others’.
