Oh, one who is mercifully reclining in the huge temple in SrIrangam! You should come and don the jasmine flower which has fragrance fitting well and wafting in it

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

karu … – (kaNgaL – unnaik kaNdAl – karuvudai mEgangaL kaNdAl okkum – uru udaiyAy) – Oh, one who has the cool, divine form such that when (our) eyes look at you, it appears like looking at dark clouds which are laden with water! Alternatively, when eyes look at water-laden clouds, it would appear that we are looking at you.

kaNgal uru udaiyAy – this could also be considered to mean that emperumAn’s divine eyes have the beauty of his divine form.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that this term is to be split as kangaL udaiyAy [one who has divine eyes] and uruvu udaiyAy [one who has divine form]. Oh, one who has divine eyes which do not have anything which can be termed as equivalent! Oh, one who has beauty which is also of the same nature [does not have anything which is an equivalent]!

ulagEzhum uNdAga vandhu piRandhAy – Oh, one who came and incarnated such that all the worlds got uplifted, by gaining their existence!

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that emperumAn incarnated in order to uplift the worlds which he had created, such that they would behave as per his divine mind and not get atrophied, as per their karma [past deeds]. emperumAn is one who establishes righteous activities and looks after the well-being of the worlds. Since it is he who incarnates as the dharmaSabdhavAchyan (He is the identity for the word ‘righteousness’) enhancing existence of the worlds and instructs through preceptors to carry out mangaLASAsanam, AzhwAr refers to this as piRandhAy. However, there are entities such as SiSupAlan et al [he was krishNa’s cousin] who would speak disparagingly for this reason [that krishNa was born just like anyone else and that there is no need to give any prominence to krishNa]. This earth, very patiently, puts up with people like pauNdraka vAsudhEvan [he was a contemporary of krishNa, who told everyone that he was the real krishNa] as well as others who thought of their birth, their wealth, other dhEvathAs as being supreme.

thiru udaiyAL maNavALA – just as it has been mentioned in sthOthra rathnam 12ka:SrI: SrIya:” (one who is periya pirAttiyAr’s wealth), in SrI guNarathna kOsam 9 “Sriya:SrI:” (wealth of periya pirAttiyAr) and periya thirumozhi 7.7.1thiruvukkum thiruvAgiya” (embodiment of wealth for periya pirAttiyAr (SrI mahAlakshmi) who is the cause for the wealth of everyone), oh, one who is the beloved of periya pirAttiyAr, who has you as her wealth!

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that this term gives the reason for his incarnation. Since emperumAn is referred to as “ka:SrI:SrIya:”, “SrIya:SrI:”, “thiruvukkum thiruvAgiya” [we have seen all these just now] and in periya thirumozhi 4.9.2sindhai thannuL nIngAdhirundha thiruvE” (Oh, one who is the wealth, always residing in my heart, without every separating), he becomes her wealth. Since he is her wealth, she is at liberty to enjoy him or play with him or appropriate him, the way she pleases. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI guNarathna kOSam 22 “kEvala krupA nirvAhya vargE vayam SEshithvE parama: pUmAn” ([addressing SrI mahAlakshmi] We are under your control, looking up to your mercy while emperumAn remains as your lord), since he is her beloved, he has to recline in the place where she tells him to.

thiruvarangaththE kidandhAy – Oh, one who is reclining mercifully in kOyil [the huge temple in SrIrangam] for her happiness of protecting the samsAri chEthanas [AthmAs in samsAram]!

maruvi … – you should come to don the jasmine flower, in which fragrance is wafting, without leaving it.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here as an alternative interpretation that yaSOdhAp pirAtti tells krishNa that he should sit on her lap and don the jasmine flower.

We shall next consider the 3rd pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
