Oh, complete one who is mercifully residing in thirunaRaiyUr! Oh, one who is my vital air which sustains me! Oh, one who rules me! Oh, my lord who showed mercy in my matters, without a break! I, My father, his father who was born before him and persons from his past seven generations have been performing natural servitude towards you. Alas! I will not allow you, who have come and entered in my heart, to leave.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

en thAdhai … – I, my father, his father, seven generations from him (i.e. my grandfather). It is said in mahAbhAratham – bhIshma saying to dharmaputhra (yudhishtra) – “EkAhamapi kaunthEya bhUmistham udhagam kuru | kulam thArayathE thAtha! saptha sapthacha saptha cha” (Oh yudhishtira, my dear child! At least one day offer water to earth; that will help uplift your 21 generations of family members). Whatever benefit a person acquires, while it spreads to the near/dear ones, it will go for seven generations as said in thiruppallANdu 6EzhpadikAl” (seven generations). This implies that the whole clan exists for bhagavAn only. While I did not beseech you, you have come and entered my heart. Will I allow such you to leave? Is there anyone who would throw away the treasure he/she got?

andhO … – Even after AzhwAr saying “ottEn” (will not allow), bhagavAn thought of leaving; AzhwAr is saying “You are losing this entity (me)”. Oh, one who conducts my sustenance where I cannot sustain myself without you!

arasE – Oh, one who eliminated my enemies and ruled over!

aruL enakku nandhamaith thandha endhAy – Oh, my lord who showered so much mercy that I can hold your divine feet and stop you saying “Don’t leave”! He came and stood in thirunaRaiyUr and blessed AzhwAr in this manner.
