Just as a calf would think about its humble, mother cow which was not milked, I, who am your servitor, without forgetting, keep calling you who are the lord, telling your name. Oh, one who is complete in auspicious qualities, who is mercifully residing in thirunaRaiyUr which is surrounded by orchards having abundant honey! Oh, benefactor who is my father! You should mercifully ensure that I am not born any more in this samsAra.

Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

kaRavA … – Just as a calf would think about its humble, mother cow which was not milked. piLLai amudhanAr wanted to explain it as “Just as a humble, mother cow which was not milked, will think about its calf”, but since it did not match with the intent of AzhwAr, became upset. That is apaksha dharmam – it will not be apt to refer to AzhwAr as mother cow and bhagavAn as calf. Hence, bhattar mercifully explained – kaRavA mada nAgai (the humble, mother cow), than kanRu uLLinAp pOlE (the calf called out for its mother), Because of not having been milked, it will have the pain from the stiffness in the udder; with that, bhagavAn’s pain (in not helping his devotees) is revealed. Because of not being milked, the calf’s tongue becoming dry due to not suckling its mother, is revealed; with that, AthmA’s pain (in not being helped by bhagavAn) is revealed. Just as the calf of a cow which was not milked, will think about its mother.

maRavAdhu … – Though being in this samsAra where there is scope to forget you, I am not forgetting you. I, who am ananyArha (not existing for anyone else), am telling you, who are the lord, and calling out.

naRavAr … – Oh one who is complete in auspicious qualities, who is mercifully residing in thirunaRaiyUr which is surrounded by orchards having abundant honey!

piRavAmai … – Taking birth will lead to forgetting you. You should mercifully bless me to avoid such birth for me, which will lead to forgetfulness.

endhai pirAnE – If you, who can eliminate my hurdles (birth), don’t do it, is there anyone else who can do it? If you think about me and help me, I will exist; otherwise, I will cease to exist. I, who am ananya gathi (refuge-less) in this manner, thinking about you who are my lord, am calling you. If you don’t eliminate my hurdle, is there anyone else who can do it?
