Simple Translation

yaSOdhAp pirAtti, who has locks on which beetles settle, had called and told herd-women, during the time of krishNa’s incarnation, about his divine limbs. bhattar pirAn [periyAzhwAr], the controller of beautiful SrI villibuththUr, with plenty of affection, had mercifully stated those in twenty-one pAsurams. Those who learn these pAsurams, will go past the region of primordial matter and dwell aptly in SrI vaikuNtam.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

suruppAr kuzhali … – the word surumbAr has got transformed as suruppAr. surumbu – beetles. To imbibe the honey which drip from the flowers donned by yaSOdhAp pirAtti, beetles settle on her locks. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that she decorated herself with flowers constantly so that krishNa will come to her, without getting angry. Since she was having flowers constantly, beetles were also settling on her hair all the time, to drink the honey from the flowers.

mun sonna thiruppAdha kEsaththai – the divine foot to divine locks, which she had enjoyed during the time of krishNa’s incarnation, and which she showed to others. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that just as krishNa had incarnated in SrI madhurA and shifted to thiruvAyppAdi, periyAzhwAr too, after his birth in SrI villibuththUr, shifted to the mansion [nAchchiyAr thirumALigai}.

then … – mercifully composed, with overflowing affection, by periyAzhwAr, a brAhmaNa and controller of SrI villibuththUr. Here, maNavALa mAmunigaL, in his vyAkhyAnam, compares the affection between yaSOdhAp pirAtti and periyAzhwAr towards krishNa.

His affection is not like hers. He had described yaSOdhAp pirAtti through pAsurams such as (1) 1.2.1 “kOdhaikkuzhalAL aSodhai” (2) 1.2.3 “paNaiththOL iLavAychchi”, (3) 1.2.12 “maiththadam kaNNi yasOdhai” etc; he had described krishNa’s divine activities through pAsurams such as (1) 1.2.4 “uzhandhAL naRuney”, (2) 1.2.9 “adhirum kadalniRa vaNNanai”, (3) 1.2.15 “”nOkki yasOdhai” etc; he had described krishNa’s activities which are outside of this incarnation, such as 1.2.5 “maRam koL mArvai munkINdAn” as well as activities which occurred in the later stages of this incarnation itself, such as (1) 1.2.10 “irumAmarudham iRuththa ip piLLai”, (2) “sagadaththaich chAdippOy vAL koL vaLai eyiRRu Aruyir vavvinAn”. He was able to talk about these divine activities of emperumAn since he had been granted knowledge with devotion, without any trace of doubt, by emperumAn himself such that all the events which happened even in earlier times and in later times were vividly seen by him.

He enjoyed these events with the same passion with which yaSOdhAp pirAtti had enjoyed them. Seeing the events just as she had seen and speaking about showing the events to her friends are the features where he shared commonality with yaSOdhAp pirAtti. Hence, he was able to mercifully mention about “asOdhai mun sonna thiruppAdhakEsaththaith thenpudhuvaip pattan viruppAl uraiththa”. This feature is applicable to similar events which will be mentioned in the other padhigams which will follow this.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that pattan refers to eminent brAhmaNa.

irubadhOdu onRum uraippAr – this would refer to those who are able to recite these with the same pathos with which periyAzhwAr had composed them; it would also refer to those who, even if they do not have periyAzhwAr’s pathos, could recite them as mere words.

pOy … – they will be able to go to SrI vaikuNtam and live there without ever separating from there, carrying out mangaLASAsanam to emperumAn, just as it has been mentioned in thiruppallANdu 12sUzhndhirundhu Eththuvar pallANdu” (they will carry out mangaLASAsanam by being with emperumAn at all times), enjoying emperumAn to completion.

This brings us to the end of the second padhigam of first centum.

We shall next consider the pravESam [introduction] of the third thirumozhi [decad].
