avathArikai (Introduction)

While AzhwAr was enjoying the overall beauty of the divine face of krishNa, the divine eyes secured his attention, as a result of which he enjoys their beauty again. While it was the divine nose which he enjoyed the last, among the divine organs on the divine face of krishNa, there is a commonality between these two [while the divine eyes are like lotus flowers, the nose is like the stalk of that lotus].  Also, when he is enjoying the beauty of krishNa from his divine foot to his divine crown, the eyes come in that order of sequence and are like a vortex, pulling AzhwAr towards them.

Simple Translation

krishNa incarnated earlier, as the son of vasudhEvar, who has earth as his habitat, in order to eliminate the distress of celestial entities such as indhra et al who have heaven etc as their habitats. He is growing up [in SrI gOkulam] such that monsters would get annihilated. Have a look at his divine eyes. Oh, women, who are wearing golden bangles! Come and have a look at his divine eyes.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

viNkoL … – Since the purpose of emperumAn’s incarnation is to protect the noble ones etc, in order to eliminate the distress of celestial entities such as indhra et al, who inhabit worlds such as svargam etc, coming from monstrous entities, he incarnated earlier as the son of vasudhEvar, who inhabits earth. Since vasudhEvar was imprisoned, since krishNa was going to be born as his eighth son, krishNa incarnated as his son first, to eliminate vasudhEvar’s distress before eliminating the distress of celestial entities, just as thirumangai AzhwAr has mentioned in his periya thirumozhi 8-5-1 “thandhai kAlil vilangaRa vandhu thOnRiya thOnRal” (the lord who incarnated in order to break the chains from his father’s feet). thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that he could eliminate the distress of celestial entities only if he removes the distress of vasudhEvar.

thiNkoL … – the one who was growing up in order to annihilate the monsters who had physical as well as mental strength. As krishNa’s legs grew [as he was growing up], the monsters’ position was decaying. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that he grew up in thiruvAyppAdi in order to get rid of his distress [he considers the distress of his favourable ones as his own]. For the monsters, thiNmai [strength] refers to the pain in the hearts of krishNa’s followers due to the monstrous nature of kamsan et al and their birth. In other words, without considering that they are his parents or relatives, kamsan imprisoned them all; without considering that they are his nephews, he hit them against rock as soon as they were born. krishNa grew up in thiruvAyppAdi in order to burn the stomachs of such monsters and to annihilate them.

kaNgaL … – since he has come to help the noble ones and to destroy the enemies, he was showering his mercy on the favourable ones such that they would be protected. Look at his divine eyes. Oh, women who are wearing golden bangles! Come and have a look. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term kanavaLai [golden bangles] symbolises the total dependence of the surrendered entities’ possessions.

We shall next consider the 17th pAsuram of this thirumozhi.
