avathArikai (Introduction) – she says that they saw kaNNan, looking like a decorated elephant, sweating and playing in Sri brindhAvanam.

Word-by-Word Meanings

kAr – in the dark cloud

Simple Translation

Did you see the lord, who had trapped me with his eyes, which are like blossomed lotus on a dark cloud, which are like a long rope and with which he pulled my heart along to wherever he went? We have seen him with a jacket made of pearls, like a huge elephant calf which is resplendent, sweating and playing in SrI brindhAvanam.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

kArththaN kamalak kaN ennum – the reddish eyes on his dark divine form were like lotus flowers, which remove the ennui of those who look at them, on a dark monsoon cloud.  The divine form itself, which is like a monsoon cloud, attracts the heart and eyes of those who see it. Being the limb on top of that, the beauty of the eyes further engages the beholder. Doesn’t the divine form itself attract the beholder, as mentioned in Sri rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 83-8? “mEghaSyAmam mahAbAhum sthirasathvam dhrudavrutham l kadhA dhrakshyAmahE rAmam jagatha: SOkanASanam ll” (When will we see SrI rAmapirAn who is dark like a cloud, who has long hands, who has stable strength, who has firm vow and who removes the sorrows in the world?) Did not SrI bharathAzhwAn too say “The boiling sensation in the body resulting from being the son of kaikEyi will be annulled only when I wake up to the divine and beautiful face of SrI rAma”?

kamalak kaN ennum nedum kayiRu paduththi – trapping in the long noose, which is the divine eyes

kamalak kaN ennum – divine eyes are like the lotus flower in terms of blossoming nature, beauty, coolness and fragrance, manifesting the compassion inside the heart.

nedungayiRu – these eyes are like a long rope, following me wherever I go, trapping me

nedungayiRu paduththi ennai IrththukkoNdu viLaiyAdum Isan – with the long net, encircling me such that I could not escape, looking at me with coolness, making me as his servitor, ensuring that my deed is not as per my thought, pulling me towards him, being playful due to these, like a svathanthran (totally independent person)

kArththaN … Isan – does he not roam around, manifesting his divine form, looking with his divine eyes, trapping girls! In this way, he made me to be engaged with him totally, through his beauty, making me to babble incoherent words, making these activities as his pastime, remaining as the lord, not bothering about anyone.

pOrththa muththin muppAyap pugarmAl yAnaikkanRE pOl vErththu ninRu viLaiyAda – when kaNNan plays, the appearance of little droplets of sweat on his divine form would make him look like an elephant calf, which is radiant, having a pearl jacket [sweat drops would look like pearls].

vErththu ninRu viLaiyAda virundhAvanaththE kaNdOmE – unlike parama padham where one cannot sweat at all, unlike thiruvAyppAdi, where despite having a garland like a prince, due to fear of his parents, he would not be playing, we saw him in SrI brindhAvanam, where he could play as he liked.
