Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
thUmbudai … – Mercifully eliminating the sorrow of the elephant which is having trunk which is having holes, remaining like palm tree as said in thiruvAimozhi 4.1.4 “panaith thAL madha kaLiRu” (mad elephant [kuvalayApIdam] which had well rounded palm tree like feet). If it is recited as “paNaikkai“, it means the elephant which throws those who are caught by it, to break their waist. With this, it is always respected; the elephant which had never been insulted.
mannu … – Holding the mountain which has bamboo which is well rooted in the earth, my lord who protected from the unstoppable rain.
pUm punal … – River ponni which has water with blossomed flowers; “pU” also implies beautiful.
muRRum pugundhu – Spreading everywhere and filling fully instead of just entering through a single canal. If recited as “muRRam“, spreading everywhere outside.
pon varaNda engum – Bringing along all the available gold.
thEm pozhil … – Since there is continuous flow of water, thirunAngUr which is having gardens with continuous fragrance.
